THE HON. E. G. WHITLAM,
IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.
THURSDAY, 5 JUNE 1975
W'HEN I LAST REPORTED TO THE PARLIAMENT ON THE
GOVERNMENT'S ACHIEVEMENTS AT THE END OF THE SITTINGS
IN DECEMBER 1974, I STRESSED THE CONTINUING IMPORTANCE
OF THE GOVERNMENT'S PROGRAMS. I EMPHASISED THAT WE
WOULD PRESS AHEAD WITH * OUR PROGRAMS IN FULFILMENT OF
THE UNDERTAKINGS WE HAD ' GIVEN TO THE AUSTRALIAN
PEOPLE. THE PEOPLE HAD TWICE ENDORSED THOSE PROGRAMS
AT THE ELECTIONS OF 1972 AND 1974. THEY HAD TWICE

NEWCASTLE WOMEN'S CENTRE
The Australian Government is negotiating the purchase
of Lysaght's Recreation Centre in Newcastle for use as a community
centre for the women of the Newcastle area.
The Prime Minister said the project had been submitted
by the Hunter Region Working Women's Group. It would be
funded through grants from the Hospital and Health Services
Commission_($ 25,000) the interim committee of the Children's
Commission ($ 42,000) and ' the.* International Women's Year

LOCAL ROAD PROJECTS
Residential streets have been included in urban
local roads assistance for the first time. This means that
Australian Government money can go towards helping local
authorities improve streets in their areas.
The Prime Minister and Member for Werriwa, Mr Whitlam
said today he was delighted to be able to confirm the
Australian Government's policy of providing financial help
to local government so as to help improve the urban

NEW URBAN ROAD PROJECTS
The Werriwa electorate will benefit from new urban road
projects which were recently approved by the Federal Transport
Minister, Mr Jones.
The Prime Minister and member for Werriwa, Mr Gough
Whitlai said today that the 7 projects in the Werriwa area
would cost an estimated $ 1,032,000 in 1974/ 75.
He said that $ 158,000 would be spent on Elizabeth Drive,
involving construction and widening to six lanes from Copeland

UNIVERSITIES COMMISSION AND CO4MISSION ON ADVANCED
EDUCATION
The Prime Minister, the Hon E. G. Whitlam, stated today
that after consultation with the Minister for Education, the
Hon Kim E. Beazley, he has decided to amalgamate the Universities
Commission and the Commission on Advanced Education into a
single statutory advisory body to the Australian Government on
universities and colleges.
