ASSISTANCE FOR SOCIAL WORKERS
The Australian Government will give an extra $ 315,000 for
the training of social workers over the next three years. Cabinet
decided today that $ 240,000 would be provided for a training
programme through the University of Melbourne, and $ 75,000 for
training through the University of Sydney. The additional allocations
will cover the years 1973, 1974 and 1975.
Cabinet decided to give further consideration to a submission
from Flinders University regarding the contricution of special

GOVERNMENT TO ACT ON CONVENTIONS
OPPOSING RACIAL DISCRIMINATION
On the occasion of the International Day for the
Elimination of Racial Discrimination, the Prime Minister and
Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Whitlam, has reaffirmed
that the Government was resolved to ratify the International
Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination
as soon as the necessary legislative and other
measures could be completed.

AUSTRPALIAN DELEGATION TO 29TH
ECAFE CONFERENCE
The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr E. G. Whitlam,
announced today that the Special Minister of State and Minister
assisting the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Senator Don Willesee,
would lead the Australian Delegation to the 29th Session of the
United Nations Economic Commission for Asia and the Far East
( ECAFE), to be held in Tokyo beginning on Wednesday 11 April.

AMBASSADOR APPOINTED FROM THE PEOPLE'S
REPUBLIC OF CHINA
SThe Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Whitlam, announced
today that the Australian Government had given its agreement to
S the appointment of Mr Wang Kuo-ch'uan as the People's Republic
of China's first Ambassador to Australia.
Mr Wang was born in 1911. He was Governor of Jehol
Province until his appointment in 1957 as Ambassador to the German
Democratic Republic, a position which he held for six and a half

March 1973. APPOINTmENT OF AUSTRALIAN AMBASSADOR TO BURMA
The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr E. G. Whitlam,
announced today the appointment of Mr C. G. Woodard as Australian
O Ambassador to Burma to succeed Mr W. P. J. Handmer who will return
to duty in Canberra. This will be Mr Woodard's first aprointment
as Head of Mission.
Mr Woodard is a career officer of the Department of
Foreign Affairs and was born in 1929. He was educated at Prince

PROTECTION COMMISSION SUBMISSIONS
The Prime Minister, Mr. Whitlam, said today that
written submissions on the establishment of a Protection
Commission for Australian primary and secondary industries
would be received until 30 April.
Mr. Whitlam said that Sir John Crawford, in
accepting the position of adviser on the establishment of the
Commission, had said he did not wish his enquiry to be public
but would welcome written submissions. The submissions should
