APPOINTMENT OF AUSTRALIAN AMBASSADOR TO AFGHANISTAN
0 The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Whitlam, announced
today that Mr A. M. Morris, whose appointment as Australian
Ambassador to Pakistan w-s announced on 1 May, has also been
concurrently appointed as Australian Ambassador to Afghanistan.
Mr Morris will be resident in Islamabad but will Day visits to
Afghanistan from time to time.
Mr Morris was born in 1919 and was educated at Geelong
Grammar School and the University of Oxford. He served with the

SALARY INCREASES FOR NoT. COUNCILLORS
Federal Cabinet today decided to give salary
increases to all members of t-he Northern Territory
Legislative Council.
The increases are the largest in the Council's
history. The salary for ordinary Council members will
rise from $ 2,750 $ 7,250.
The salary of the Chairman will rise from $ 3,350
to $ 8,700. There will also be increases in expenses of
Council members. The rises are the first for the Council since

CO-OPERATION IN SPACE PROJECT
Australia will have access to special information
obtained through America's proposed " Skylab" manned space
laboratory. Federal Cabinet today was told that access to the.
information would be provided under the Australian/ U. S.
agreement on scientific co-operation through the new
Ministry of Science.

Re-Appointment of Chairman of the Tariff Board
The Prime Minister announced today that the
Executive Council had approved the re-appointment of
Mr. G. A. Rattigan, as Chairman of the Tariff
Board after his existing appointment ends on 15 May 1973.
In accordance with Mr. Rattigan's wish his extended term
of service would be until 15 November 1976 instead of a
full five year term.
The Prime Minister expressed the Australian

STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER
The Hon. E. G. Whitlam M. P.
PUBLIC SERVICE AGE LIMITS
The Prime Minister announced today that the upper age
limits applying to appointments to the Commonwealth Service as
Clerk, Clerical Assistant and Typist have been removed. This
move will greatly increase the opportunities for employment of
middle-aged and married women in the service.
The age limits have been 28 for clerks, 30 for clerical
assistants and between 30 and 45 ( depending on circumstancks)

ABORIGINAL ARTS BOARD
Aboriginals have been given full responsibility for
developing their own programs in the arts under a new Government
policy to revitalise cultural activities through the Australian
Council for the Arts. Artists and craftsmen from remote centres,
towns and cities have been appointed to the Aboriginal Arts Boar6
of the Council. The Board's Chairman, as previously announced,
is the Aboriginal author and artist, Mr Dick Roughsey, of
Mornington Island.

APPOINTMENT OF MR. D. L. LINEHAN AS A
COMMISSIONER OF THE PUBLIC SERVICE BOARD
The Prime Minister ( Mr E. G. Whitlam) today announced ' the
appointment of Mr D. L. Linehan to succeed Mr A. B. McFarlane
as a Commissioner of the Public Service Board.
Mr Linehan, aged 46, is an ex-serviceman, an Associate
of the Australian Society of Accountants and a Member of the
Industrial Relations Society.
Mr Linehan, who joined the Public Service in 1945,
