This is, I think, a very remarkable community effort. There
is a lot of self-help fi this matter; and there is some help by the
Government. Now that is as it should be. W~ e must marry these two

The Prie cMinisto-l', Mr. Menzies, has announced that
he has forwarded a cheque for Z100,000 to the Lord Mayor of
Perth, Sir Henry Howard, this being the Cofonwa-th
Govorn.-int's contribution towards the . xpensos of
conducting the British Empire and Corimonwealth Gcmos which
are to be held in Parth in November, 1962.
Mr. Mcnzios recalled that in l98 the Goverrmiont

to direct import control what steps will be used to curb the import of
non-essentials and thus maintain a favourable balance of payments?

I won't need to tell you that the hero of that story
that the garden told you was my old friend Sam Bird, whom I missed
very much indeed when I called at the " seat of the great" this
afternoon to see the 1arden himself. I said " Tell me, was Sam
warden of Burnie for 20 years, or was it 25?" They took me and
showed me a photograph which seemed to show that he was warden

COMMON MARKET
Statement by the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. R. G. Menzies
Mr. Duncan Sandys, Secretary of State for Commonwealth
Relations, will arrive in Australia from New Zealand on July 6.
The United Kingdom Government has informed the
Australian Government that he would like to discuss with us
various aspects of the European Common Market and the particular
questions which would arise should the United Kingdom seek to
join the Common Market.
