Sir, parliamentary colleagues, Lord Mayor, and gentlemen:

The toastmaster has told you that I am to propose the toast of Commerce and the 75th Anniversary of the Chamber of Commerce..... Now, Sir to propose the toast of Commerce is rather to invite oneself to make one of those long speeches and I don't want to do that. But to propose the toast of Newcastle on the Anniversary of the Chamber, now that is something that really, I think, attracts the mind.

I have already laid on the table of the House a
chronology of events since the end of the ' Jar and a collection
of documents relating to the period from May, 1959, to the
present time. Copies of a comprehensive collation of papers
prepared for the United States Senate and covering the period
before May 1959 have been available to Honorable Members in the

Statement by the Prm e " Minister the Rt. HonMenzies
The Prime Minister, Mr. Menzies, announced today that
the Commonwealth Government and the Queensland Government had
agreed to extend until 31st May, 1962, the period of operation of
the 1956/ 61 Sugar Agreement, which would otherwise have expired
on 31st August, 1961.
Mr. Menzies said that his Government had decided last
year that an examination of the sugar industry should be carried

Last night re conferred at Canberra. Those present
included, apart from ourselves, Mr. ' v,-rris ( Deputy Premier of
Queensland), Mr. Hiley ( Treasurer of Queensland) Mr. McEwen, Mr.
Holt, Senator Spooner, Mr. McMahon, Mr. Davidson, Sir Gaifield
Barwick, Mr. Adermann, Dr. Cameron, Mr. Hulme.
The first purpose of our conference was to discuss the

Statement by the Prime Minister, the flt. Hon. R. G. Menzies
The Prime Minister, Mr. Menzies, said that he was pleased
to announce that the Premier of New South Wales had accepted, on
behalf of the New South qales Government, the Commonwealth's
offer of financial assistance towrards the cost of installing new
coal loading facilities at the ports of Newcastle, Port Hembla

QUESTION: Sir, could you tell us, perhaps, for South Australian
interest, how far back South Australian rail
standardisation has been set by the decision to go ahead
in 4estern Australia?
PRIME MINISTER: I don't know. That process is the subject of
litigation in the High Court, commenced by the State of
South Australia so it is sub judice; so perhaps one ought
not to talk about it too much.

COMMITTEE ON THE FJTURE OF TERTIARY EDUCATION
Statement by the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. R. G. Menzies
The Prime Minister announced today the composition of
the Committee which the Government has established to inquire
into the future of tertiary educetion. The Committee would be a
committee of the Australian Universities Commission and under the
chairmanship of the Chairman of the Commission, Sir Leslie Martin.

Statement by the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. R. G. Menzies
In his recent Budget speech, Mr. Holt, in dealing
with the matter of Roads for the cattle industry, indicated
some particular provisions totalling œ 1,000,000 in respect of
Queensland and the Northern Territory. He then said:-
" The provision of œ 1,000,000 is by no moans,
however, the limit of the expenditure we have in view.

had written to the Premier of South Australia, Sir Thomas
Playford, to inform him that the Commonwealth was willing to
provide South Australia with finance not exceeding
œ 1,325,000 for the purchase by the State of twelve ' 9001 h. p.
Diesel-Electric Locomotives, and one hundred 55-Ton capacity
