STATES GRANTS ( UNIVERSITIES) BILL ( NO. 2) 1962
The purpose of the Bill before the House is
to authorise the Commonwealth to offer to the States of New
South Wales, Victoria and South Australia grants for the
University of New South Wales, Monash University and Adelaide
University respectively, which are supplementary to those
already offered for the years 1961, 1962 and 1963 by the
existing State Grants ( Universities) Act 1960-62.

The Commonwealth Government and the Goverrment of New South Wales jointly will accord a State Funeral to the late Dame Mary Gilmore.

Arrangements for the funeral have not yet been completed but details will be released as soon as they are available. 

The funeral is a recogition by both Governts of Dame Mary Gilmore's notable contibution to Australian life and literature.

Mr. Hasluck will represent me at the departure of His Royal Highness, and is bearing with him a letter from me explaining the reasons for my inability officially to say farewell to His Royal Highness.

The first meeting-of the Australian Water Resources Council is expected. to be held early in the New  Year.

As I announced.in the Policy Speech last November, the Government considers that machinery should be set up to ensure that the highest level of basic information on Australian water resources is secured and made available .Discussions have since taken place between Commonwealth and State Ministers directly concerned with water resources and all Governments have now agreed to the formation of' a Council for this purpose.

In Canberra today, it was agreed between the Governments of the Commonwealth, New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia that the construction of the Chowilla Dam on the River Murray in South Australia would be undertaken forthwith as a work under the River Murray Waters Agreement.

The estimated cost of the work is approximately œ 14 million pounds and this will be shared equally between the Commonwealths and the three States.

COMMITTEE ON TERTIARY EDUCATION
Statement by the Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. Menzies
Professor C. R. McRae, who has been Deputy
Chairman of the Committee on the Future of Tertiary
Education, has been forced to resign because of illhealth.
In announcing this today the Prime Minister
paid tribute to the work done by rofessor McRae since
the establishment of the Committee in August last year.
Mr. Menzies also announced that arrangements
have been made for Professor J. W. Roderick Professor

I was very glad to be reminded not only when I got
here but on the way here that this is in my electorate,
and all of you who have the misfortune to be my constituents
had better have a good look at me because the way in which I
neglect my electorate is well known and, you never know, you
might not see me again for six months. ( Laughter)

old. Looking at her, I don't believe it, ( Laughter) If
it turns out to be true, then I think the one error made
