his telegram to me arising from a statement by the Conmmonwealth
Minister for Health, Senator Wade, on Sunday night, My telegram

regarding the statement made by Seantor Wade on the reduction

MEETING WITH A. C. T. U. REPRESENTATIVES
Statement by the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. Menzies
The Prime Minister, Mr. Menzies, and senior
Commonwealth Ministers today met representatives of the
A. C. T. U. in order to obtain the point of view of the trades
unions on recent and prospective developments in the
Australian economy. The A. C. T. U. was represented by Mr. Albert
Monk,( President), Mr. J. D. Kenny ( Senior Vice-President) and
Mr. H. J. Souter, ( Secretary).

During the talks we had recently with representatives
of business, a good many suggestions were put forward. as to ways
in which expansion could be promoted, business confidence
sustained and unemployment further reduced. A numaber of these
suggestions related to matters on which the Government already
had action in view.
As to employment, for example, we had just ahead
of us the Loan Council-meeting at which the works and housing

BAUXITE DEPOSITS
Statement by the Prime Minister
Tne Prime Minister announced today that, following
negotiations conducted by the Minister for National Development,
Senator Sir William Spooner, and the Minister for Territories,
Mr. Hasluck, the Government had approved the issuing of special
mineral leases to the Gove Bauxite Corporation over bauxite
deposits in the Gove Peninsula of Arnham Land, Northern
Territory, The leases would be subject to conditions requiring
