It was announced in Canberra tonight
that the acting Prime Minister, Mr. McEwen, had directed
that flags are to be flown at half mast on all
Commonwealth buildings throughout Australia on Monday,
January 25th ( tomorrow) and also on the day of~ the
funeral. The State Governments also are being asked
to do the same.

Statement by the Acting Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon.
John McEwen_ M. PA
The Acting Prime Minister Mr. McEwen, announced
that, following his designation as Australian Ambassador
to Ireland, the Honourable HS. Roberton had today
tendered to His Excellency the Governor-General his
resignation as Minister for Social Services.
Mr. McEwen also announced that the Minister
for Health, Mr. Swartz, had today been sworn in by the
Governor-General as Minister for Social Services.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives ( the Hon. Sir John McLeay) announced today that he had received from the Honorable Hugh Roberton, a letter dated 21st January, 1965 resigning his seat as Member of the House of Representatives for the electoral division of Riverina.

SOUTH-EAST ASIA
STATEMENT BY THE ACTING PRIME MINISTER
The Acting Prime Minister, Mr. John McEwen, announced in
Canberra tonight that the Cabinet had made a wide-ranging review of
current developments in Malaysia and South Vietnam with particular
reference to Australian obligations in the South-East Asian area.
Mr. McEwen said that Ministers had over recent weeks been
giving constant attention to information flowing to them on South
Vietnam and on both the military and diplomatic aspects of Indonesia's~

Statement by the Acting Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. McEwen
Mr. John McEwen, Acting Prime Minister, announced
today that the Minister for Defence Senator Shane Paltridge,
would be leaving Australia on 19th January for a visit to a
number of South-East Asian countries, Japan and the United
States. In South-East Asia the Minister will visit Malaysia,
Thailand and Vietnam.

The Acting Prime Minister, Mr. MoEwen, said in
Canberra today that the whole world would be disappointed that
the President of Indonesia, having withdrawn from the United
Nations, should now denounce this organisation.
Mr. McEwen said the United Nations was the hope
on which most of humanity pinned its faith for the progressive
development of processes to prevent war.

Menzies
His Excellency the Governor-General has
authorised me to announce that Senator G. C. McKellar will
be appointed Minister for Repatriation. It is expected
that Senator McKellar will be sworn in on Tuesday, 22nd
December, 1964. The Honourable R. J. C. Swartz, E. D.,
who is at present Minister for Repatriation as well as
Minister for Health will continue as Minister for Health.
