Sir, Your Excellencies and Ladies and Gentlemen:
You may imagine that my presence here calls for
some explanation and I concede that point, I am here for two
reasons. One is that as I am cA'llen Fairhall's Prime Minister,
he wasntt game not to ask me. ( Laughter) Now that is one very
good reason, The other very good reason is that he knew that I
would bring to this task a completely fresh and untrammelled

VISIT OF PRIME MINISTER OF SINGAPORE
The Prime Minister of Singapore ( Mr. Lee
Kuan Yew) had a brief meeting this morning with the
Cabinet. This followed an invitation by the Prime
Minister ( Sir Robert Menzies) to Mr. Lee Kuan Yew to
meet the Cabinet at its usual Tuesday meeting.
Brief talks wore held with Mr. Lee Kuan Yew.
They will be continued by Mr. Lee Kuan Yew with individual
Australian Ministers over the next few days.

Details for the National commemoration of the Fiftieth
Anniversary of ANZAC were announced today by the Prime Minister
Sir Robert Menzies.
This year being the Fiftieth Anniversary of the Gallipoli

Arrangements have been made with the State Premiers
for a Premiers' Conference to be held in Canberra on 22nd
and 23rd April.
Ihen the present arrangements for Commonwealth
financial assistance to the States were worked out in 1959,
it was generally accepted that, unless there were some major
change in circumstances, those arrangements would carry on
for six years. That period will come to an end with this

On Sunday I expressed the Commonwealth
Government's deep sympathy with the many people who had
suffered great personal hardship as a result of the
bushfires which were sweeping the southern area of
Australia. I said at that time that the Commonwealth
was prepared to help wherever possible and would match
funds provided by the State Governments in financing
schemes for the relief of personal hardship and distress.

I deeply regret to learn of the disastrous bush
fires which are now sweeping the southern area of Australia
and of the great personal hardship which has fallen on so
many people in consequence of these terrible fires.
I extend my warm sympathy to those who are suffering,
and to those particularly who have suffered the loss of loved
ones, I extend my deepest personal sympathy.

The Prime Miinister, Sir Robert Menzies, said in
Canberra today that Commonwealth and State officials had
concluded a two-day Conference on the subject of decentralisation.
Preparations had been made for this meeting following agreement
at the Premiers' Conference in July last year that there was a
need to pool the knowledge possessed by the States and the
Commonwealth on the problems of decentralisation, identify what
