PENSION INCREASES
SUPERANNUATION AND DEFE1VCE FORCES
RETIREMENT BENEFITS FUND
The Prime Minister and Acting Treasurer,
Mr. William McMahon, announced today that, arising from
the Superannuation ( Pension Increases) Act 1971 and the
Defence Forces Retirement Benefits ( Pension Increases)
Act 1971, which were recently passed by the Parliament, the
pensions of retired Coimmonwealth employees and retired
members of the Defence Forces will be increased from pension
payday 14 October 1971. The increases are related to the

For some time past now, the Government has been examining the role of nursing homes in caring for the sick aged, their financial position and the extent of Commonwealth financial assistance for all nursing home patients.

RE-APPOINTIMENT OF SIR ALEXANDER DOWNER
Statement by the Prime Minister, Mr. William McMahon
Sir Alexander Downer, has been re-appointed
as High Commissioner for Australia in the United Kingdom
for a further term until 24 October 1972.
Sir Alexander has been serving Australia's interests
in the United Kingdom with great distinction for almost
seven years, and I am very grateful that he has agreed
to carry on for another year.

Sir Allen Brown, CBE, a farmer Ambassador tojapan
and, earlier, Permanent Head of tLie Prime Minister's Department
and Secretary to Cabinet, will retire from the Commonwealth Service
with effect from 30 September 1971.
Sir Allen has had a distinguished career with the
Commonwealth Service, holding a number of senior appointments and
showing himself to be an outstanding public servant both in Australia

VISIT BY GOVERNOR-GENERAL TO IRAN
Statement by the Prime Minister, Mr. William McMahon
Their Excellencies The Governor-General and
Lady Hasluck have accented an invitation from The Shah of
Iran to attend the 25th centenary celebrations of the
establishment of the Iranian Monarchy.
The celebrations, which are to be held in Persepolis
from 13 to 17 October, are being attended by Heads of State
from all parts of the world.

INQUIRY INTO PARLIAM" ENTARY SALARIES AND ALLOWANCES

I inform the House that the Government has decided that there should be
an inquiry into Parliamentary salaries and allowances.
Parliamentary salaries and allowances were last adjusted in December 1968.
It will be generally accept'ed that there should be periodic reviews of
Parliamentary salaries and allowrances just as there are in other sectors of
