Mr. Mayor, Ladies and Gentlemen,
O We are here to honor those who died in war and to
commenorate-Anzac Day, one of the notable anniversaries in our
history. Anzac has become a symbol of a nation's valor in war.
It has become a symbol.. of " mateship",-and it has become a symbol of
the bond which unites us with our New Zealand comrades across the
Tasman. All these thoughts are with us today.

The Prime Minister has announced that the Historic
Memorials Committee has accepted the portrait of the Rt Hon.
J. G. Gorton, painted by Miss June Mendoza of
Melbourne for inclusion in the Historic Memorials Collection.
The portrait is presently being reframed after which it
is expected that it will be hung in Kings Hall, Parliament

ADMISSION OF BANGLA. DESH TO THE COMMONWEALTH

I am pleased that Bangladesh has joined the
Commonwealth. Australian support for Bangladesh's membership
was given publicly when we recognised Bangladesh in January.
I am glad that it has now proved possible to complete
successfully the necessary consultations w.% ith other members
of the Commonwealth. One immediate result will be that our Ambassador

VISIT TO SOUTH-EAST ASIA
It was announced today that the Prime Minister,
the Rt. Hon. William cMahon, CHi, MP, would make official visits
to a number of South-East Asian countries in June.
? r McMahon will visit Indonesia from 5 to 8 June,
Singapore from 9 tZo 11 June and Malaysia from 11 to 14 June.
The visits reflect the Australian Government's
long-standing interest in the region and the importance of its

I want to speak to you now about the defence and
security of Australia. Most of you know that not so many years ago we
relied for our defence on the might of the armed forces of Britain
and America. World War Two and other events, such as the large-scale
British withdrawal East of Suez, and a changed American approach to
its role as world policeman, have changed all that.

TASMANIAN FRUIT-PR~ OCESSING INDUSTRY

The Prime Minist br has received representations
on the economic difficulties of the Tasmanian fruit processing
industry from Dr. Solomon, MP and Senator J. E. Marriott,
who had been in consultation with the Premier, Mr Bethune.
The Prime Minister said that he had noted
the dependence of the Tasmanian fruit-processing industry
on a limited range of crops, mainly apples. He stated that

SPECIAL GRANTS FOR HEART AND CANCER RESEARCH
Statement b the Prime Minister, the Rt Hon.

The Prime Minister announced today that the
Commonwealth Government had decided to make a special grant
of $ 250,000 to the National Heart Foundation and a special
grant of $ 100,000 to the Australian Cancer Society.

fields of heart disease and cancer is considered to hold

16 April, 1972.
This is the second occasion I have been given the
privilege of opening up National Heart Week. The Foundation has
suggested to me that I emphasise as strongly as I can, the ways of
minimising the risk of heart disease. Research over the years has
clearly indicated the basic causes of heart attack, and I am informed
that if you take four precautions, you can reduce the risk considerably.
