STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER, MR. H. AROID1=-T&
FOR RADIO AND TV 9TH ? MCH. 1966
Mr. Caiwell's proposal for a referendum in relation to
the despatch of National Servicemen to South Viet Nam I think reflects
a misunderstanding of what is proposed.
He hearks back to the quite dissimilar situation which
existed in the First and Second World Wars. There people enlisted for
service for an indefinite period of years and in the result, many were

POLICY
INTERVIEW GIVEN BY THE PRIME MINISTER. MR.
GALLERY. CANBERRA 9TH MARCH, 196
MR. HOLT Gentlemen, my principle purpose in asking you to come
together with me this morning was that after such a lengthy statement
covering so much ground, I thought there would be a fair amount of
fill-in required. Some of you may feel that you wanted some
amplification at various points, so I didn't bring you together
to make another lmng speech, but to be available to clarify where

DAWSON BY-ELECTION
Comment by the Prime Minister, Mr. Har61d Holt
Dr. Patterson is to be congratulated on his
impressive victbry. By-elections are notoriously unreliable guides to
the state of public thinking on national issues, and the
special local features of this campaign put the result very
much in that category.
However, when the full details are available,
we shall be studying the vote and its implications closely.
