PRIME MINISTER: Gentlemen, I thought I'd just speak quite briefly to you and then
leave an opportunity for questions.
My friends from Australia who are coming around with me, I
understand, have agreed to let Singapore have the questions this
time rather than monopolise the time.
But I am very glad that as a consequence of my visit to four
countrias ofl the South East Asian and Pacific region, which I have

Before departing on his tour of Asia, the Prime Minister made the following
comments to the Press in response to questions
Q. What do you expect to come out of this trip, Sir?
PM: There are s everal valuable purposes, as I see them. First, this
is an area of great strategic significance for Australia. We have been

Mr. President and Gentlemen:
I regard that as a somewhat qualified introduction but
I have already been told that you will have to leave at two otclock,
so I shall not be speaking to you either at the length the
Treasurer finds necessary at Budget time, or as Prime Minister
on a leisurely evening occasion such as I felt able to indulge

VISIT FROM U. N. HIGH COMMISSIONER FOR REFUGEES
Statement by the Prime Minister, Mr. Harold Holt
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Prince
Sadruddin Aga Khan has accepted an invitation to visit Australia as a guest
of the Commonwealth Government.
The Prince, who was elected High Commissioner for
Refugees by the Gnr. eral Assembly in December, 1965, will be making
his first visit to Australia.
He is expected to arrive in Sydney from Geneva on Saturday,

ANZAC COMMEMORATIVE MEDALLION AND BADGE
Last March, the Minister for Defence announced that it had
been decided by the Australian Government, in consultation with the New
Zealand Government, to issue a medallion and lapel badge to the veterans
of the Gallipoli Campaign.
I am glad to be ale to announce that arrangements have now
been completed for the production of the medallion and the badge. The

REFEREN DUM
Both Houses of Parliament have now approved the
bills containing the proposed laws to alter the Constitution. The bills
were the Constitution Alteration ( Parliament) Bill and the Constitution
Alteration ( Aboriginals) Bill.
Under the provisions of the Constitution, a proposed
law for an alteration of the Constitution must be submitted to the electors
not less than two months, nor more than six months, after the proposals

OIL, GAS AM~ NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT
This paper is an abridged version of the speech
by the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. Harold Holt,
to a conference of the Australian Petroleum
Exploration Association in Sydney on Monday,
13th March, 1967.
The speech sets the Government's record and policy
in the sea-rch', for oil and gas in the context of its
broad policies for the promotion of national
development, and deals with recent criticism of
certain aspects of its oil search policy.

MA LAYSIA
Statement by the Prime Minister, Mr. Harold Holt
The visit to Australia next month by the Deputy Prime
Minister of Malaysia, Tun Haji Abdul Razak bin Hussain, will be a
means of further strengthening and deepening the good relations already
existing between our two countries.
Tun Razak will arrive in Australia on Thursday, 13th
April following a four-day visit to New Zealand, and will lea,, e cx.-gain
for Kuala Lumpur on Sunday, 23rd April. He will be a guest ofI the

AUSTRALIAN HELP FOR ITALIAN FLOOD RESTORATION
Statement by the Prime Minister, Mr. Harold Holt
The Commonwealth Government will provide an
amount of $ 30, 000 to assist in restoration work made necessary by the
disastrous floods in Italy last year.
Australia will undertake the restoration of one room in
the National Library of Italy in Florence together with its contents which
were extensively damaged. The services of a restoration expert will also be
provided to help restore paintings damaged in the floods.
