JOINT STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER AND THE MINISTER ASSISTING
THE PRIME MINISTER FOR THE STATUS OF WOMEN, SE14ATOR MARGARET
REYNOLDS. The Federal Government today released its Natidnal Agenda for
Women which sets out steps to advance the stat~ s of Australian
women to the year 2000.
For the first time in Australian history, a Go'~ ernment has made a
long term commitment to ensure that women can dxercise a real
choice about how they spend their lives and hov) they can
participate fully in Australian society.

We are now some two months into our Bicentennial year and
have already shared such memorable events as the
' Australia Live' telecast, the start of the year-long
journey around the continent by the Australiah Bicentennial
Exhibition, and the Australia Day celebrationt on Sydney

I have agreed to convene a meeting shortly of
representatives of the Business Council of Australia, the
Confederation of Australian Industry, the Australian Council
of Professions, the Australian Council of Trade Unions and a
representative of the small business sector.
The proposal to call the meeting arose out of today's
discussion at EPAC of prices and incomes policy, which
highlighted growth in executive remuneration very much
faster than the growth of average weekly earnings over
recent years.

MELBOURNE 18 FEBRUARY 1988
It is a very great honor to be here to open the new
Australian Ballet Centre with my friend and colleague John
Cain. I was interested to note, when the invitation was extended
to me to be here today, that a Gala Performance of " Sleeping
Beauty" is to be staged later this evening.

The Structural Adjustment Committee of Cabinet met today
with the principal players in Australia's waterfront
industry. The reduction of shore-_ based shipping costs is
crucial to Australia's international competitiveness, and a
central element in the Government's general economic reform
strategy.
Thirteen Ministers, including all the senior economic
Ministers, attended the two hour meeting with participants
in the Government's Waterfront Strategy group, who between

The Government will amend the Australian Bicentennial
Authority Act early in the Autumn Sittings of Parliament to
ensure that the Australian Bicentennial Authority ( ABA) is
subject to the Freedom of Information ( FOI), Ombudsman and
Archives Acts.
Recent Opposition allegations that the Government is
attempting to hide something by exempting the ABA from the
coverage of the FOI Act are completely without foundation.
The simple fact is that a regulation was passed last

Senator Nick Bolkus was elected to join the third Hawke
Ministry. This election follows the resignation on
9 February 1988 of the Hon. Mick Young, MP, from the
office of Minister for Immigration, Local Government and
Ethnic Affairs.

Poessor John Mulvaney and Rex Harcourt, which tell's the
