1am delighted to be here today to launch Convict Workers.
The occasion, and the historic setting of the old Mint in
which we stand, provide me with an opportunity to reflect -on
the Bicentennial Year, and on the sense of our history which
it engendered.

Justice Muirhead7
PM: Well I've known about this now for come time that it
was impending. I've had discussions with him and it's a
decision which I understand completely. He has made a great
contribution and he has the opportunity of taking up the
appointment as Administrator of the Northern Territory, a
position for which he is eminently well equipped. I think

The Government proposes to recommend to the Governor-General
the appointment of the Honourable J H Muirhead QC to be the
next Administrator of the Northern Territory.
It is expected that Mr Muirhead, who was nominated by the
Northern Territory Government, will take office in the
middle of the year. He will succeed His Honour Commodore
Eric Johnston AM OBE who has been Administrator of the
Northern Territory since 1980.

should understand that while it's appropriate to remember the
time of war between our two countries, it is more appropriate to

" At this time of great sadness for the Japanese nation, I wish to extend to you personally, and through you to the people of Japan, the sympathy of the Government and people of Australia.

The Government has formally nominated about 262,000 hectares
of South West Tasmania for World Heritage Listing. The
nomination adds to the existing World Heritage site some
per cent of the Lemonthyme and Southern Forests inquiry
area, together with the Walls of Jerusalem National Park and
the Central Plateau Conservation Area.
The combined area, to be known as the Tasmanian World
Heritage area, will exceed one million hectares. This is

I will visit major Asian countries from 29 January to 13
February next year the Republic of Korea, Thailand,
Pakistan and India.
The Republic of Korea has an outstanding record of economic
growth in recent years and has become one of Australia's

Mir Jones, has made a convincing case for early consideration
of initiatives to enhance the Government's science policy.
Senior officials had identified concerns of the research
community, in a report prepared for Cabinet consideration.
