JOURNALIST: How important is it that the Government, the
Opposition and the Diggers are going to be there?
PM: I think it's the indication of the way in which all
Australians, irrespective of their politics or their age,
understand the significance of Anzac. And it's something
which I think all Australians now are coming to

The Government is concerned at the actions of the Soviet
authorities in cutting essential supplies to Lithuania.
These actions are inconsistent with what in fact is urgently
needed now a genuine dialogue between Moscow and Vilnius
aimed at achieving a negotiated settlement in an atmosphere
free of tension.
I have written to President Gorbachev expressing our concern
and urging the Soviet Government to take early steps towards
a negotiated settlement on this issue. I am hopeful that

If memory serves me right, it was sometime late in 1988
the Year of the Bicentenary that Kim Beazley mentioned to
me that Bill Hall, as Patron of the World War I Veterans'
Association of New South Wales, had raised with him a great
idea:

I met today with the President of the Australian Medical
Association, Dr Bryce Phillips; and Sir Dennis Paterson,
Head of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Adelaide
Children's Hospital; and other members of the AMA to
discuss the next steps in the development of the National
Road Trauma Advisory Council ( NRTAC).
The Council's proposal, which has the strong support of
my Government and has also now received expressions of
support from the States and Territories, was originally

Together with the Minister for Science and Technology and
the Minister Assisting me on Science, Simon Crean, I am
announcing today the winners of the inaugural Australia
Prize. The international award is shared jointly by
Professor Allen Kerr of the University of Adelaide,
Professor Jeff Schell of the Max Planck Institute in Cologne
and Professor Eugene Nester of the University of Washington.
This year's prize, valued at A$ 250,000, is awarded for

APPOINTMENT OF SECRETARY, DEPARTMENT OF IMMIGRATION, LOCAL
GOVERNMENT AND ETHNIC AFFAIRS
The present Secretary of the Department of Immigration,
Local Government and Ethnic Affairs, Mr Ron Brown, has
advised that he intends to make a career change from the
Commonwealth Public Service.
On behalf of the Government, I express appreciation for the
contribution that Mr Brown has made in Immigration, Local
Government and Ethnic Affairs, and before that as Executive

I am delighted to announce that the British Government has
agreed to make a gift to Australia of an original document
containing our Australian Constitution.
The document is an original copy of the Commonwealth of
Australia Constitution Act the British Act of Parliament
which was passed in 1900 and which brought our nation into
existence on 1 January 1901.
The document, which has been on loan to Australia since the
Bicentenary and is on display in Parliament House, is the

Following the el' ction of the new Ministry by Caucus at its
meeting today, I am pleased to announce the full list of
members of the MLnistry with the portfolios which I will be
recommending to the Governor-General.
The swearing in of the Ministry is scheduled for 9.30 am on
Wednesday 4 April.
The number of Mitiisters remains at thirty, with a Cabinet of
17. The list, which is attached, also provides details of
representation in the other Chamber.

I note that the Leader of the Opposition has today conceded
the defeat of the Liberal/ National Party Coalition in the
Federal election and I thank Mr Peacock for that concession.
Although the count of votes remains to be completed, it is
obvious that the Australian Labor Party will have a clear
workable majo) rity in the House of Representatives. The
Labor Party therefore in a position to proceed to form a
fourth Governiment.
