Special benefits paid to bushfire and flood victims in the
two weeks following the recent disasters will be ~ e~ tfo
tax.
This will ensure that these payments will receive thc samne
tax free status that has generally applied to relief pa %, me-nts
provided for disaster victims from public appeal funds.
Following representations from the Victorian and South
Australian Premiers the Government has agreed that the incomoe
tax law should be changed to ensure that those payments aro

The Commonwealth Government has provided South Australia with
& n interest free $ 11 million loan for three years to enable
the salvage of some of the timber burnt in the disastrous
February bushfires.
Trhe bushfires destroyed 19,000 hectares of pine plantations
containing a substantial proportion of the State's supply
of prime saw logs.
This; meant that the long-term supply of timb~ er to spwmills
would be drastically reduced.
The South Australian Government has estimated that it would

one of thle most important results of the National Economic
Summ~ rit Conference was that during the period of wage restraint
increases in dividends and non-wage incomres such as directors'
fees should also be subject to restraint.
Accordingly, I have written to the leaders of many publtic
companies in Australia seeking their support for restr~ a. it
in this area.
Through this statement I would like to extend the rcqucst
to every company in Australia.

invitation to meet with him in Washington on June 13 1
indicated it was probable that visits to other countries
would be included in the itinerary.

Your visit, Mr Premier, the first to our country by a
Chinese Head of Government, marks an important step
forward in relations between Australia and China.
The first step was taken by my distinguished
predecessor, Gough Whitlam, who as Leader of the
Opposition made a pioneering visit to Peking in July
