PREMIERS' CONFERENCE AND LOAN COUNCIL MEETING
JUNE 1 JULY 1983
The heads of government of the Commonwealth of Australia
and of the six states today reached agreement on important
fiscal policy aspects of the Commonwealth Government's
national economic recovery programme.
After two days of discussions in the Premiers' Conference
and the Loan Council, the heads of government agreed that
the Commonwealth Government has designed its macro-economic
policies to promote national economic recovery. In

The Administrative Arrangements are to be altered to give the
Treasurer responsibility for the Australian Taxation office.
This change will mean that both taxation administration and policy
will revert -to being under one Minister.
At present, taxation administration is the responsibility of
the minister for Finance, and taxation policy is the
responsibility of the Treasurer.
Mr Dawkins is to become the Minister Assisting the Prime Minister
for Public Service Matters.

PETER BOWERS: Mr Hawke, I wish to ask you about the decision
taken by Mr Bowen to commit the two existing uranium miners to
renew negotiations for new export contracts. The day before you
left Australia sir, you said that that ministerial decision was
in conformity with party policy on uranium. Will you now say
which part of that extraordinarily complex new' policy permits the
negotiation of new uranium contracts?

OF THE FIRST THOUSAND DAYS THAT ISj THE LONGER TERM

The Commonwealth Government today offered to reimburse the
Queensland Government for all expenditure on agreed works on
the Burdekin Dam project in the current financial year up
to $ 6.5 million.
The payment will be made by way of a non-repayable grant.
The Commonwealth Government expects shortly to approach the
Queensland Government to begin negotiations for the future
funding of the project.

The Acting Prime Minister announced today the appointment of
five new members to the Australian Science and Technology
Council, together with the re-appointment of two mem; rbers whose
initial term of service had been completed.
Mr Bowen said that the new members appointed to the Council
were: Professor P. I. Korner, Director of the Baker Medical
Research Institute; Professor J. W. Nevile, Professor of
Electrical Engineering at the University of New South Wales;
