When the Federal Labor Government was elected a little over
a year ago, the central challenge vie faced was the challenge
of economic recovery.
Looking back over the past year, tie are clearly entitled to
claim that outstanding progress has already been made.
But to appreciate fully that progress you have to cast your
minds back to the appalling economic legacy we inherited.

NAMING OF THE LOCOMOTIVE " BOB HAWKE"
ADELAJDE 18 APRIL 1984
I am greatly honoured to have been chosen to give my name toa
one of the new range of " BL" class locomotives. I have
noted with particular satisfaction that one of Australian
National's earlier locomotives was named after one of my
predecessors, that dedicated railway man and great
Australian, Ben Chifley.
I understand that these locomotives are a new, improved
model with state-of-the-art refinements which lead to

I met today with the Premier of Tasmania, Mr. Robin Gray,
as a follow-up to our meeting on 6 April.
The discussions were productive and another meeting will be
held within the next two weeks at which it is hoped
substantial progress towards a resolution of the issues
between the Commonwealth and Tasmania will be achieved.
It was agreed that no further public comment would be made
before the next meeting.

The Prime Minister today announced details of the ' visit to
Australia of Mr. Naohiro Amaya, special adviser to the
Minister of International Trade and Industry in Japan.
Mr. Amaya arrived today for a visit of six days, which will
include involvement in seminars in Canberra, Sydney and
Melbourne on industry policy.
He will meet Ministers, Commonwealth and State officials,
business people, union leaders, academics and journalists.

the Council here in Coburg. In February Hazel and I
attended a special Council meeting, followed by dinner as
part of the celebration of the 1.25th anniversary of local

Mr President, Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen
Whilst Sir Phillip and I may have somewhat differing
political views, I hold him in high regard and am saddened
that he is so unwell. I deem it both a pleasure and a
privilege to act on his behalf in the presentation of the
Award which bears his name.

HOUSING INDUSTRY CONVENTION ADELAIDE 14 APRIL 1984
Thank you for inviting me to address you today, and thank
you particularly for the welcome conveyed just now by your
National President.
It is a pleasure to address the Housing Industry Association
at its Nineteenth National Convention. We hayve seen much of
each other in the past year, a year which has been a very
exciting one for the Government and for the housing
industry.

HUMAN VACCINE BUILDING AT PARKVILLE 13 APRIL 1984
Distinguished Guests
It is with great pleasure that I accepted the invitation to
join you today.
This new human vaccine building, this new biotechnology
facility, is a major addition to the nation's health care
system. At a cost of approximately $ 9 million it represents a
significant investment by the Australian community in the
health of present and future generations.
