JOINT STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER AND THE HON. J. J. BROWN,
MINISTER FOR SPORT, RECREATION AND TOURISM
The Australian Sports Commission, which will hold its first
meeting today, will bring a new focus to sports funding and
development.
While Federal Governments over the past decade have been
involved in sports development, their efforts have
suffered from fragmentation, erratic funding and lack of
consultation with sports bodies.
The ASC will be responsible for overseeing the allocation of

Unnecessary panic is being generated amongst pensioners by
wildly inaccurate reports of the plans for implementation of
the assets test.
At this stage no final advice or forms have been approved.
The Government has consulted pensioner organisations-t-oensure
the final forms cause as little alarm as possible.
The Government's approach has been thoroughly endorsed by most
responsible pensioner organisations.
They want their members to realize that very few pensioners will
be affected by the test.

Last week the Leader of the Opposition asked a number of
questions about the concern expressed by Mr Costigan
regarding the progress of the transition from the Royal
Commission to the National Crime Authority on 6 September.

The appointment of Professor Stuart Francis Harris as Secretary, Department of Foreign Affairs;, is to be recommended to the Governor-General in Council.

The appointment of Professor Harris follows the announcement earlier this year by the present Secretary, Mr. P. G. F. Henderson, that he proposed to stand down as Secretary in September this year, upon completion of five years in the position.
