The former President of the National Farmers' Federation,
Mr Michael Davidson, and the Director of Exploration of
Western Mining Corporation Ltd, Mr Ray Woodall, have been
appointed to the Australian Science and Technology Council
( ASTEC) for three years.
Professor Roger Tanner, head of the Department of Mechanical
Engineering at the University of Sydney, has been re-appointed
for a second three year term.
Mr Davidson, who has held a variety of important positions

A FEW BRIEF WORDS ARE, HOWEVER, IN ORDER.
AS YOU ALL KNOW JAPAN HAS FOR MANY YEARS BEEN AUSTRALIA'S MOST
IMPORTANT TRADING PARTNER. I AM SURE THAT IT WILL REMAIN SO.
HOWEVER, THE NATURE OF TRADE BETWEEN OUR TWO COUNTRIES IS CHANGING.

FOR MEDIA VISIT OF HU YAOBANG
The General-Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party
( CPC) Hu Yaobang is to pay a goodwill visit to Australia
on April 13-18 at the invitation of the Australian
Government. Mr Hu will be accompanied by Hu Qili, member of the
Secretariat and a number of other important officials of
the CPC and the Goverhment.
This will be an important event in the relationship
between AuStralia and China, to which the Government

Although this Government has been able to arrest the
massive explosion in youth unemployment which characterised
particularly the last two years of the Fraser Government, we as
with the rest of the community are still concerned with the
dimension of this problem. And it was for this reason, of course,
that we commissioned reports by Mr Peter Kirby and also had the
OECD Report both of which we've recently received. Since the

Many-submissions have already been received in response to
the Government's invitation for the community to help shape
a national campaign against drug abuse.
Most submissions so far have been letters from individuals
with suggestions on how particular drug problems could be
solved.
I **, The Government will continue to encourage submissions from
community groups and individuals until February 16 so that
the comprehensive national c-ampaign will reflect community
ideas and concerns.
