FOR MEDIA 23 February 1985
The Prime Minister today announced he had accepted an
invitation from the Rt Hon Brian Mulroney, Prime Minister
of Canada, to address the Canadian National Economic
Conference. The invitation is to deliver the keynote address on the first
day of the Conference, which is to be held in Ottawa from
March 22-23.
Mr Hawke said he was delighted to be able to accept the
invitation, which represents an international recognitjion of
the considerable national economic achievements to whch all

MARTIN: The Prime Minister, Mr Bob Hawke has for the past
two days been involved in close discussion with all the parties,
and he has joined up in our Parliament House studio with us now,
so welcome to the show Mr Hawke.
PRIME MINISTER: Thanks Ray.
MARTIN: I know that you have spent the last couple cf hours,
the last hour or so with the Federal President of the AMA and
with Mr Mulock, the NSW-Minister, do you have good news for us?

The Prime Minister today welcomed the announcement by
H. R. H. Prince Philip that the sixth Duke of Edinburgh
Commonwealth Study Conference will be jointly hosted by
Australia and India in May 1986.
" I have a particular interest in the Conference, not
only as the Prime Minister of the host country but
also as a past Conference member.
" In the latter role I can attest to the value to be
obtained from attending.

The Queensland power dispute has now developed to the point
where it is causing national damage as well as the very
considerable harm and inconvenience it is bringing to the
people of Queensland.
The dispute also has the potential to do serious harm to
Australia's standing as a reliable exporter.
In these circumstances, I call upon all parties to the dispute
to accept the recommendations of the State Industrial
Commission which will allow an immediate return to work.

The talks with the Council of Procedural Specialists broke
down with no satisfactory solution.
It became apparent during the discussions that the specialists
had no real intention of reaching an agreement. They came
to Canberra simply to tear up Medicare.
It is absurd of them to pretend that there is some distinction
between the views of Dr Blewett and the Government's policy..
Both the Federal and NSW Governments are adamant that the basic
components of Medicare will remain undisturbed.

PM: Ladies and gentlemen I've just come from the Caucus where I
made a lengthy report to the Caucus on a range of matters
including, of course, recent events around the MX decision and my
visit to the United States. I'm pleased to say that the Caucus
without dissent endorsed the decision that was made by thd Federal
Cabinet on this matter. I read the decision of the Cabinet which
was, as I say, unanimously endorsed by the Caucus. It was in
these terms-

The Prime Minister, Mr Bob Hawke, and the Premier of South
Australia, Mr John Bannon, today announced joint funding of
a $ 2.8 million Riverboat Museum and educational display
centre at Goolwa, adjacent to the mouth of the Murray River.
Mr Hawke and Mr Bannon said this important historical
project was part of the $ 5 million Commonwealth contribution
to fund Bicentennial commemorative projects in South
Australia which are intended to provide lasting testimonies
to the Bicentenary in 1988.

The Federal Government's substantial package of offers to the
New South Wales medical profession to end the long-running
doctors' dispute will remain open.
If the leaders of the dispute advise their members to return
to work, the Federal and New South Wales Governments will
immediately undertake direct negotiations on the details and
implementation of the offer.
The Government has sought to meet all the reasonable concerns

Federal Cabinet today reaffirmed Australian Government
Policy on the basic issues of the Australia/ U. S.
Alliance, ANZUS Treaty and on disarmament and
deterrence. Cabinet took these decisions today after it received and
endorsed a report on my recent overseas visit.
As a result of the discussions, and bearing in mind our
close relations with both the U. S. and New Zealand,
Cabinet will shortly consider a paper on the practical
measures with regard to the U. S. and New Zealand for
