JOINT STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER, THE PREMIER OF NSW,
THE PREMIER OF VICTORIA, AND THE PREMIER OF SOUTH AUSTRALIA
ministers from the Commonwealth, New South Wales, Victoria
and South Australia will meet in Adelaide in November to
consider more effective ways of managing the Murray River
and its Basin.

Tonight I want to speak to you about the Australia we live
in today.
And the kind of Australia I believe we should be living in,
in the future.
There's not a country on the face of this eatth that doesn't
have problems of one kind or another.
in Australia we have fewer than most, but problems
nevertheless.
We still have unemployment.

With the agreement of Her Majesty The Queen, the Commonwealth
and the United Kingdom Governments, and the Governments of all
Australian States, the way has been opened for the major
historical step of severing remaining constitutional links
between Australia and the United Kingdom.
The Australian Government and the Governments of all the
Australian States have held extensive consultations over a number
of years with a view to removing the outmoded links between
Australia and the United Kingdom parliamentary, government and

Ladies and gentlemen. I very much appreciate this
opportunity to join you tonight.
This celebration by BHP of its centenary is a very
special occasion.
The last 100 years have seen BHIP prosper.
It is now the largest Australian company, and a
very large company by world standards, rating equal
to some of the companies in the top 50 US
corporations.

SYDNEY 13 AUGUST 1985
I am very pleased to have been able to Join you here today
for the opening of the Federated Iron Workers new
headquarters.
This new headquarters is a great achievement on the part of
both the FIA leadership and its members. Coming at the
same time as the historic campaign for the amalgamation of
the FIA and the Australasian Society of Engineers nears its
climax gives added point to the occasion.

Labor Party will stop this factional problem that has
been going on in Canberra?
PM: Yes. I believe that they realise that the Opposition
hasn't put a glove on us this year. And we have been very
much tied up with our own problems of tax and so on, and a
bit too much factionalism. There is a very good feeling
now in the Party. And the problems in the Liberal Party

His Majesty King Ibirendra of Nepal will make a State visit
to Australia from Sunday, 1 September to Sunday, 8 September
1985. He will be accompanied by Her Majesty Queen Laxmi Jevi Shah.
Their Majesties are visiting at the invitation of the
Governor-General Sir Ninian Stephen and Lady Stephen.
The Australian Government welcomes the visit as an opportunity
to strengthen the relationship between Australia and Nepal.
