YEARS AGO, THE VISION AND HUMANITY OF PETER BENENSON, A
CATHOLIC LAWYER OF JEWISH DESCENT, BORN OF ENGLISH AND
RUSSIAN PARENTS, GAVE BIRTH TO AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL, THE
GREAT ORGANISATION WHOSE ANNIVERSARY WE CELEBRATE TODAY.
IN RlAY 1961, THE FIRST AMNESTY APPEAL WAS MADE, ON BEHALF OF
POLITICAL PRISONERS FROM EIGHT COUNTRIES AROUND THE WORLD,

Cabinet todiay considered the implications of the recent South
African raids on Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The Federal
Government condemns the South African actions in the strongest
terms. It is impossible to justify such arrogant violation of
the sovereignty and territorial integrity of South Africa's
neighbouring states. The situation in southern Africa demands
an end to apartheid and a suspension of violence on all sides.
The attacks have severely bruised the initiative taken through

JOURNALIST: Mr Hawke, can you give us some indication
of the discussions with Hu Yaobang, what were the nature
of the discussions?
PM: I can't go into all the details but I can say to you
that we covered a broad range of relations involving China
with the West, with the Soviet Union and with our own bilateral
relationships. And he gave me his exposition of the way
he and the leadership have China saw the current position

1HEN GENERAL-SECRETARY HU YAOBANG VISITED AUSTRALIA,
ACCOMPANIED BY SECRETARY, HU OILI, IN 1985, HE AND I
DECIDED THAT AUSTRALIA AND CHINA SHOULD CONCENTRATE SOME
OF OUR EFFORTS ON DEVELOPING CO-OPERATION IN THE FIELD OF
WOOL, ITS PRODUCTION, PROCESSING AND MANUFACTURE. THE
OPENING OF THIS JOINT-VENTURE WOOL TEXTILE MILL GIVES
TANGIBLE EXPRESSION TO THOSE ASPIRATIONS, THIS ENTERPRISE

IN XIAMEN, HAVING JUST RETURNED FROM THE CITY OF ZHANGZHOU.
MANY FUJIANESE HAVE MADE THEIR HOMES IN OTHER PARTS OF THE
WORLD INCLUDING AUSTRALIA WHERE THEY HAVE MADE GREAT
CONTRIBUTIONS TO DEVELOPMENT OF THEIR NEWLY ADOPTED COUNTRIES.
FROM WHAT I HAVE WITNESSED THIS MORNING, THEIR KINSMEN WHO
