FOR MEDIA 18 November 1986
An Office of Multicultural Affairs is to be established within
my portfolio, reporting to me and to Mr Hurford who, in
addition to his present responsibilities, is to be Minister
assisting me in Multicultural Affairs.
The responsibilities of the Office will embrace both ethnic
and multicultural affairs.
It will be basically an advisory and research body, with the
administration of established programs of a specific nature
remaining where they are now.

Colleagues, Distinguished Visitors and Guests, Friends All:

There is a quite superb combination of features associated with this occasion.

We meet in this historic port-city of Fremantle the western gateway of Australia.

For generations this was the landfall for hundreds of thousands of immigrants to Australia this nation of immigrants.

OPENING OF FREMANTLE TOWN HALL
16 NOVEMBER PERTH
It's not often a Prime Minister gets the opportunity to open
a building which is 99 years old. The Fremantle Town Hall
was already a fairly venerable building when I was a boy in
these parts and I could never have guessed I would be
involved in this official ceremony in 1986. So Mr Mayor, it
was a great honour you did me when you extended your
Council's invitation to be here today to open, or to be more

The following Public Service appointments have today
been made:-
Mr A. J. Woods, AO, Secretary, Department of Resources
and Energy, has been appointed Secretary, Department
of Defence following the retirement of Sir William
Cole. Mr Woods has headed the Department of
Resources and Energy ( under its various names) since
December 1977. Prior to that he had experience in a
number of Departments, and most particularly in the
trade and industry policy fields.

Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen
On behalf of the Australian Government I extend a warm
welcome to all of the participants in this conference and,
in particular, to the many distinguished visitors from
overseas. Nothing could be more fitting than that the first
major OECD conference to be held in this country should be
on " Policies and Directions for Science and Research".

gave in Melbourne this morning, mainly on the subject of
logging in Tasmania. Also attached is a copy of a letter the
Prime Minister has sent today, Thursday, 6 November, to the
Premier of Tasmania on the subject of the logging activities
which commenced in the Jackey's Marsh area yesterday,
