The Prime Minister, Mr. John Gorton, has sent the following message to Tun Abdul Razak who today ( Tuesday) succeeded Tunku Abdul Rahman as Prime Minister of Malaysia

DOUBLE TAXATION AGREEMENT WITH GERMANY

The Acting Treasurer, Mr. Gorton, said today that Australian
officials and officials of the Federal Republic of Germany negotiating in
Canberra have agreed on the text of a draft agreement for the avoidance OZ
double taxation between Australian and the Federal Republic of Germany.
These negotiations followed talks held in Bonn last year.

CHISHOLM BY-ELECTION RESULT
Comment by the Prime Minister, Mr. John Gorton
My warmest congratulations to Mr. Tony Staley for his
remarkably good win in a by-election for a seat already held by the
G vernment. He has reversed the normal swing away from the GoverLnment
ii a by-election at this stage, has improved the Government', shar
of the vote compared with the General Election las: t year.
It is pleasing to see that the ALP has not increased its vote
in spite of this being a by-election.

RETIREMENT OF TUNKU ABDUL RAHMAN
Tribute by the Prime Minister, Mr. John Gorton
The Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tunku Abdul Rahman, ste7s down from
office tomorrow after thirteen years during which he has left an indelible im; rint on
Malaysian history.
The Tunku was the political architect first of Malayan Independence in 1957
and subsequently of Malaysia in 1963. In the course of his period in office he has
guided tl a national destiny with courage and remarkable skill.

PRIME MINISTER HAi MINOR OPERATION
The Prime Minister has had to cancel his planned meeting ir.
the Chisholm By-Election in Melbourne tomorrow ( Monday) night.
Mr. Gorton returned to Canberra today after undergoing a
minor operation at the Mercy Hospital in Melbourne last week.
Arrangements had been made for him to enter the hospital during the
week's Parliamentary recess and the operation for a fistula was
performed successfully last Wednesday.
As it was only a minor operation, he had intended going ahead
