Statement by the Prime Minister, Mr John Gorton
I have agreed to a request by Sir Daryl Lindsay, made
some iu. e ago, that he be permitted to step down as Chairman of
the Commone alth Art Advisory Board. He wishes to concentrate
his energies as Chairman of the Interim Council of the Australian
National Gallery, but has agreed to continue to serve as a member

PATROLLING OF THE GREAT BARRIER REEF
Statement by the Prime Minister, Mr John Gorton.
Patrols by the RAN and the RAAF along the Great
Barrier Reef are to be increased.
For some time now, the RAN and the RAAF have
been regularly patrolling Australia's major fishing grounds.
The increased range and frequency of these
surveillance missions along the Great Barrier Reef will provide a
further deterrent to breaches of Australia's fishing laws.

NUCLEAR POWER
Statement by the Prime Minister, Mr John Gorton
The Federal Government has invited New South Wales to
collaborate in a study of the feasibility of the establishment of a Commonwealth-
owned and controlled 500 megawatt nuclear power station. It is
also inviting all State Governments to work with the Commonwealth on a
National Consultative Committee on Nuclear Energy.
Announcing this today, the Prime Minister ( Mr Gorton)
said that the Commonwealth would prefer the station, which would be a

APPOINTMENT TO NATIONAL RADIATION
ADVISORY COMMITEE
Statement by the Prime Minister,_ Mr. John Gorton
Dr. J. M. Rendel has accepted an invitation to
become a member of the National Radiation Advisory Committee.
Dr. Rendel is Chief of the Division of Animal
Genetics of the C. S. I. R. 0. and Chairman of the Animal Research
Laboratories. He will fill the vacancy created by the resignation
of Mr. D. A. Gill. Dr. Rendel, with his background in animal health

Q. Prime Minister, could this American withdrawal of
troops point the way to you bringing home some of our own
soldiers?
PM: I don't t ' hink sD. As I said in the House on the 15 May,
this unilateral withdrawal was quite possible. But I think it
would be wrong for various reasons to think of bringing home
Australian troops at this time. For example, since our Army

REDUCTION IN U. S. FORCES IN VIETNAM

It is necessary to draw a distinction between Ameni LIB
force reductions made possible by an increase in size and fighting
capacity of the South Vietnamese forces, and force reductions by both
sides as a result of agreement with the North Vietnamese. We are now
dealing only with the first of these.
The United States decision to withdraw twenty-five
thousand of the half million men they have in Vietnam was foreshadowed

BENDIGO BY-ELECTION

I congratulate Councillor Cambridge on the results
of the Bendigo By-Election.
It is too early to say who will win the seat, and the
distribution of preferences will decide this.
But considering the Labor Party had an absolute
majority of primary votes at the last three House of Representatives'
elections for Bendigo and that by-elections traditionally go against
sitting governments I believe the Liberal Party and its candidate

MILITARY EQUIPMENT FOR MALAYSIA
Statement by the Prime Minister, Mr. John Gorton
The Government has agreed to provide the additional
military equipment recently asked for by the Malaysian Government.
The supplies requested are of a type already being
provided to Malaysia under the existing Defence Aid Programme,
and include rifles, communication equipment, life jackets and
small boats for patrolling inland waterways.

ECONOMIC CONSULTATIONS

Invitations have been extended to representatives of national
organisations to meet with Ministers in Canberra next month.
Ministers will meet three groups of representative
organisations on 9 July primary industry, manufacturing industry and
commerce. Invitations have also been extended for representatives of
the Manufacturing Industries Advisory Council and of the Export

You were kind enough, Mr. ' Chairman, to mention an early
association of mine with this concept of Colleges of Advanced Education.
And indeed it was, I think, a bold and new experiment to start such colleges
and to make them not competitive with universities, not on a collision
course with universities but turning out people with the same graduate
