W. A. EARTHQUAKE
The Prime Minister has asked the Premier to pass his sympathy
to residents of Cadoux whose homes had been damaged by
earthquake. " Australia is fortunate in that earthquakes are rare occurrences
and usually are mild. It is noteworthy, however, that Cadoux
is directly north of Meckering, which was damaged severely
some years ago" Mr Fraser said.
The Premier has also been informed that any request for aid
will receive prompt and sympathetic consideration.

ELECTORATE TALK
over the last few months, industries in New South Wales have
been disrupted and threatened because of the actions of a
group of refinery workers at Kurnell.
Although they are part of a national industry, they have acted
to try and get more money for themselves under a State award.
They have refused to accept the ruling of the Conciliation and
Arbitration Commission that they had to work under the Federal
Award. They have set out to deliberately defy the Commission the
independent umpire.

STATEMENT TO THE PARLIAMENT
The package introduced by the Treasurer last week was one of
economic responsibility. It puts the economic health of
Australia and the well-being of all Australians wherever*
they may be, whatever their occupations may be, foremost in
the Government's mind.
The Government's commitment to responsibility is critical to
economic recovery. Because of our policies inflation has been
substantially reduced. The competitiveness of Australian

TRADE NEGOTIATIONS
I am pleased to announce to the House that today, a settlement
has been reached on bilateral trade negotiations between
Australia and the European Economic Community, held under the
umbrella of the GATT round of MTN.
Honourable Members will recall that Mr Anthony recently
concluded trade agreements with United States of America and
Japan and that these were signed last month.

GIFT OF ARAB STALLION
A final selection has been made of an Arab stallion to be
presented as an official gift from Australia to India.
The selection was announced today after a meeting between
the Prime Minister, Major V. P. Singh, Commander of the
Bodyguard of the President of India, and Colonel S. B. L. Kapoor,
Military Adviser, Indian High Commission.
Major Singh was invited to Australia to make the final
selection of an Arab stallion which the Prime Minister had

The Prime Minister will visit Nigeria on 28-30 July 1979 at
the invitation of the Nigerian Head of State,. General Obasanjo.
He will then proceed to Lusaka, Zambia for the Commonwealth
Heads of Government Meeting to be held on 1-8 August 1979.
While in Nigeria the Prime Minister expects to exchange views
with General Obasanjo on major current issues, including
Southern African matters, and to continue discussions on

STATEMENT TO PARLIAMENT
During the five days I was away from Australia I had discussions
with Presidents Marcos and Soeharto and Prime Minister Ohira
of Japan, and addressed the UNCTAD meeting in Manila.
This series of discussions was held against the background of
significant changes in the international strategic situation.
There is continuing instability in Africa and parts of the
Middle East. Developments in Iran continue to generate
anxiety regarding oil supplies and about the security of the

The private Member of Parliament the Member who sits on the
backbench is a key and central figure in the Parliamentary
democracy we enjoy in Australia.
The private Member is in a special position. He is able to make
a unique contribution to government.
He is a barometer of public attitudes simply because of his intimate
links with his constituents.
He is able to quickly sense a community need and bring that to
the attention of government.

ISSUE OF NATIONAL FLAGS
The Prime Minister has written to Premiers and to the Chief
Minister of the Northern Territory, outlining the
Government's decision to extend the free issue of the
Australian Flag.
For many years the Government has issued the National Flag
free to schools, orphanages, recognised youth organisations
and National and State sporting bodies. This has helped
to foster, particularly in young people, respect for and
familiarity with the National Flag and a knowledge of
