OPENING OF THE CAMPANIA CLUB
I am delighted to be at the Campania Club for this official
opening because these new headquarters are a significant
expression of multicultural Australia, and a tribute to
the efforts and vision of the club and its members.
I will say something in a a moment about the achievement
which these new headquarters represent, but beforeI come to
that, let me just say that the activities of-this club, and
others like it, enrich the life of the nation as a whole

AUSTRALIA'S BICENTENARY 1988: THE'AUSTRALIAN ACHIEVEMENT
The Commonwealth Government has recently given further
detailed consideration to the philosophy and overall strategy
for Australia's bicentenary celebrations in 1988. This further
development of the Government's thinking provides additional
guidance to the Australian Bicentennial Authority in meeting
its responsibility of planning and staging the Commonwealth
Government's contribution to this historic commemoration.

ALCOA SMELTER AT PORTLAND
I am delighted that negotiations between ALCOA and the
State have placed ALCOA on a " secure footing. The people
in Portland have been enormously worried over recent weeks.
Those concerns can now be put aside and positive planning
ca~ i proceed for the future.-The dreams we have for Portland
are in the process of becoming a reality.

JOINT STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER AND THE PREMIER
OF WESTERN AUSTRALIA: CLEARANCE OF UNEXPLODED ORDNANCE
AT WARNBRO
For the past two years, the Commonwealth Government and the
Government of Western Australia have been co-operating in
the clearance of unexploded ordnance from the former artillery
range at Warnbro.
This project entailed several new features: it has been
conducted under the auspices of the State Government by trained
civilian contractors, but with Commonwealth technical and

Beef Imports
The Minister for Primary Industry is to visit Tokyo to
advise the Japanese Government of Australia'Is concerns -river
the Japanese decision to reduce beef imports in 1981/ 82 by
8,000 tonnes,
0.31, his visit also reflects growing Government copqern at -tFe
proqrestieve decline in Au'stralia's share of the Japanese
domestic market following two successive quota reductions this
year and the reduction in Japanese chilled beef imports.

INAUGURAL ADDRESS ON MULTICULTURALISM
TO THE INSTITUTE OF MULTICULTURAL AFFAIRS
Mr Chairman, Councillors and members of the Institute,
distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen. I greatly
welcome the invitation to give the Australian Institute
of Multicultural Affairs' inaugural lecture because of the
opportunity it provides to explore issues important to the
future of our country.

ELECTORATE TALK
Earlier this year I made a joint statement with the Victorian
Premier announcing that the Commonwealth would make a gift
of $ 5 million to Victoria to mark the 150th anniversary of
the arrival of the Hentys at Portland, and the settlement
of Melbourne one year later.
Since the time of that announcement, discussions about how
the money should be spent have been held yith the Victorian
Government which in turn received advice from the Citizens'

COMMONWEALTH GRANT TO SAINT ANDREWS CATHEDRAL,
SYDNEY, PRESTORATION APPEAL
The Prime Minister announced today that the Commonwealth
Government will contribute $ 100,000 towards the
Saint Andrews Cathedral Restoration Appeal Fund.
Saint Andrews the oldest cathedral in Australia
is a prime example of the work of Edmund Blacket,
the Victorian Gothic Revival architect, and occupies
a pre-eminent position in Sydney.
The appeal aims to raise $ 1.35 million for a cause
