MINISTERIAL COMMITTEE ON THE A. C. T.
Following a request by the Liberal Party Senator for the A. C. T.,
Senator Margaret Reid, the Government has decided to establish
a new Cabinet Committee on Australian Capital Territory matters.
The decision follows discussions which took place between the
Minister for the Capital Territory, the Hon. Michael Hodgmnan, DIP,
and Senator Reid.
The Committee will comprise the minister for Education ( Chair),
the Attorney-General, and the Ministers for Administrative

VISIT BY THE PRIME MINISTER TO THE
REPUBLIC OF KOREA
The Prime Minister announced today that he will visit
the Republic of Korea later this month in response to an
invitation extended to him by the Korean Government.
The visit to Korea will be the first by an Australian
Prime Minister since that made by Mr Holt in 1967. The
Prime Minister will arrive in Seoul from Japan on 23 May
and leave for Australia on 25 May.

VISIT BY THE PRIME MINISTER TO JAPAN
The Prime Minister announced today that he will visit Japan
later this month in response to an invitation extended to
him at the time of the visit to Australia of the late
Prime Minister Ohira in January 1980.
The Prime Minister will arrive in Tokyo on 20 May from the
United States and hold discussions with the Japanese Prime
Minister, Mr Zenko Suzuki, on 21 May.

We welcomed the opportunity for discusssions with Vice President
Bush and also the emphasis that the President has placed on
consultations not only with Australia but with countries in the
western Pacific, and the Vice President has been taking in Japan,
Korea, Australia.-And New Zealand and going back through China
at a time when there is so much interest and attention being

It is a very great pleasure to have Mr and Mrs Bush with us
here tonight. I understand that you, Mr Vice-President, have
some familiarity with Australia from a previous visit. But
more particularly you are no stranger to the region in which
we live. For not only were you involved in the Pacific War,
where you won three air medals and the Distinguished Flying
Cross, but in more recent years you were the first incumbent
of the U. S. Office in Peking from 1974 to 1976.

CONDOLENCE MOTION FOR MR HORACE JAMES GARRICK
I move that this House expresses its deep regret at the death
on 6 April 1982 of Mr Horace James Garrick, Member of this
House for the division of Batman from 1.969 to 1977, places
on record its appreciation of his meritorious
public service and tenders its profound sympathy to his family
in their bereavement.
