THE 1977-78 BUDGET
The 1977-78 Budget underlines the Government's philosophy,
and its resolute approach to the tasks of economic and social
rehabilitation to which it is committed. It is a Budget of

DEATH OF PRESIDENT MAKARIOS
It is with deep regret that I inform the House of the death
on 3 August 1977 of His Beatitude Archbishop Makarios III,
President of the Republic of Cy-prus.
I move: that the House records its sincere regret at the
death of His Beatitude Archbishop Makarios III, President
of the Republic of Cyprus and expresses its profound sympathy
to the people of Cyprus.

NORTHERN TERRITORY ELECTIONS
Although final results in the Northern Territory elections
may not be known for a fortnight, and although counting
has not started in two seats and has only just begun in
two others, it is already clear that there has been very
strong support for the Country Liberal Party.

the Tasmanian State Council at Ulverstone yesterday. They

paragraph. " The recent proposals to spend $ 800 million are another example
of Labor's strange approach to public affairs. When they were

AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT TO BE REPRESENTED AT THE FUNERAL OF
ARCHBISHOP MAKARIOS
The Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. Malcolm Fraser, today announced
that the Hon. M. J. R. MacKellar, Minister for Immigration and
Ethnic Affairs, would represent the Australian Government at the
funeral of the late President of Cyprus, His Beatitude,
Archbishop Makarios III.
The Prime Minister said that the funeral would be held in
Nicosia on Monday 8 August. The attendance of Mr. MacKellar

I wish to express profound regret at the news of the death of
His Beatitude Archbishop Makarios III, President of the
Republic of Cyprus. In Archbishop Makarios, the world and
the Commonwealth have lost a statesman of great eminence who
had long personified-his people's quest for identity and
independence, and had played a unique role in his country's
national and international affairs.
