COMMONWEALTH GAMES EDMONTON
The Hon. Wal Fife, Minister for Business and Consumer Affairs,
will represent the Federal Government at the 11th Commonwealth
Games to be held in Edmonton, Canada, commencing on 3 August.
The Prime Minister, Mr Malcolm Fraser, announced this today.
He said that Australia has a strong contingent at the Games
arnd he felt confident that our team members would perform
well and worthily represent Australia in these competitions.
The Commonwealth Government previously announced a grant of

The Government is encouraged by the latest Consumer Price
Index figures, which show that inflation in Australia is continuing
to fall steadily. The CPI increase of 2.1 percent which has
just been announced was the lowest for any June quiarter since 1972.
Inflation for the 12 months to December last was 9.3 percent;
for the 12 months to March, it was 8.2 percent; and it is now
down to 7.9 percent, the lowest for any period of 12 months
since 1973.

Discussions with Mr. N. Ushiba Japanese Minister of State
for External Economic Affairs
The Prime Minister will hold discussions at Nareeri next
Monday ( 31 July) with Mr. Nobuhiko Ushiba, the Japanese
Minister of State for External Economic Affairs. The
following day, Mr. Ushiba will meet in Canberra with a
number of senior Australian Government Ministers.
Mr. Ushiba, who is visiting Australia from 31 July to 2 August
as a guest of the Australian Government will be briefing

APPOINTMENT OF SECRETARY
TO THE DEPARTV4ENT OF THE TREASURY
The Prime Minister, Mr. Malcolm Fraser, today announced that
Mr. John Owen Stone is to be the next Secretary to the
Department of the Treasury when Sir Frederick Wheeler
retires on 8 January, 1979.
The Government has seen advantage in a handover period
and in an early resolution of the matter of succession.
Mr. Stone, who has been Deputy Secretary of the Treasury
since 1971, has first-class honours degrees in Science

QUESTION: Mr Fraser, there has been some suggestion there are
people here from overseas looking to buy rams for export. Are
you worried about any confrontation with the Trade Union
movement over this?
PRIME MINISTER: I think that the matter can be handled quietly,
and I also -t-hink it will sort itself out. In one sense it is
not a great matter, but it is important to the people concerned.

ELECTORATE TALK
At a time of economic difficulty, the jobs of thousands of
Australians are in jeopardy because of the calculated
activities of a secion of the union movement.
Existing jobs are now at risk, while opportunities for the
unemployed are being shut out because of the continuing drive
by key unions for wage increases clearly outside Conciliation
and Arbitration guidelines.
This selfish campaign is an attempt to frustrate the Government's
efforts to restore economic health to Australia and is directly

The Commonwealth has approved employment training for a second
group of 500 eligible young people under the Special Youth
Employment Training Programme in New South Wales State
Government Departments and Authorities.
The Commonwealth has already provided SYETP assistance for an
initial intake of 500 young people under a similar arrangement
in January 1978.
The Prime Minister said the Commonwealth was pleased that the
New South Wales State Government had joined the Commonwealth in

PROGRAMME FOR THE OBSERVANCE OF THE 30TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE
UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS
The World Community is this year comnmemoratin~ g the
Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
The Prime Minister said today that as a consequence of a decision
by the Government earlier in the year he was now approaching
State Premiers to seek their participation in a programme
of domestic activities to mark the anniversary.
