ADDRESS AT SYDNEY ROTARY CLUB
I am particularly pleased to have an opportunity to speak to
your club which has such a fine record of community service
in the city of Sydney.
Voluntary organisations such as Rotary play an essential role
in helping to solve the problems of individuals in need of
help. The community depends on you, just as it depends on
government. Neither of us alone can fully meet the social problems in our
society. Ours is a co-operative venture to ascertain what the

The announcement of a significant oil find in the Bass
Strait reminds us our country's great natural wealth.
It reminds us that in a very true sense we are a lucky country,
endowed with rich and abundant mineral resources required
by countries throughout the world.

I congratulate Mr. Kerin on his return to the
Federal Parliament.
While not detracting from Mr. Kerin's convincing win,
the outcome should be seen in perspective.
Werriwa is one of the safest Labor seats in New Wouth Wales
and over the past 26 years Mr. Whitlam's primary vote

It is blue-ribbon seat for the A. L. P. and they were
inevitably assisted by the traditional by-election swing
against the Government of the day.
This year the Government has been forced to make some difficult

STATEMENT ON MIDDLE EAST SITUATION
I seek leave to make a statement to the House about the
agreements reached at Camp David between Prime Minister
Begin of Israel and President Sadat of Egypt.
As Honourable Members will know, the thirteen day long Camp
David talks which concluded on September 17 resulted from
the personal initiative of President Carter.
The Government very much welcomed this initiative and it
welcomes the promising results that have been achieved.
