MEAT INSPECTION INQUIRY
The Prime X~ inister today announced that he had written to
State Premiers and the Chief Minister of the Northern Territory
seeking their agreement to the establishment of an independent
committee to inquire into and report on Commonwealth and State
meat inspection arrangements.
The Prime Minister emphasised the necessity of obtaining
State Government co-operation to enable the committee to
effectively conduct its wide ranging investigations. State

The Prime Minister announced today. two initiatives which
are significant in the Government's determination to gain
for Australia the positive benefits of technological
innovation and the better understanding of labour market
questions. The Prime Minister said that he particularly welcomed the
initiatives which industry and the unions with Government
had taken through the NLCC through the establishment of a
Tripartite Committee to examine labour market questions

Department of Employment and Industrial Relations has
expanded very greatly. I think we can see the results
in that in a greatly improved industrial climate which
comes partly from the relationship which has developed
between Tony Street and the trade union movement. Partly

The Ministerial changes that I have announced this afternoon
are designed to achieve a better and a fairer workload between
Ministers, but in particular they are designed to enable work
in certain areas to expand arnd to respond to the changing needs
of Government and of government service to the people of
Australia. I

Ministerial Changes
The Prime Minister anno-nced today changes in the Ministry
flowing from the decision to establish a separate Department
of Industrial Relations and a Department of Employment and
Youth Affairs. Mr. Street will become Minister for Industrial
Relations and Mr. Viner, Minister for Employment and Youth
Affairs. Under Mr. Street as Minister, the activities undertaken by the
present Department of Employment and Industrial Relations have
been considerably expanded.

SECOND DERWENT BRIDGE IN HOBART
The Prime Minister today expressed surprise ar the claims made by
the Premier of Tasmania and Senator Wriedt that the Commonwealth
Government was atteisting to modify its comAitment to the
Second Hobart Bridge.
Mr Fraser said: " I cannot see any foundation whatever for either
Mr Lowe's or Senator Wriedt's suggestion. Twice in the past year

ELECTORATE TALK
It has been a long standing rule in our home that during
Christmas time the Fraser family stays together. That rule
has been rigorously applied by Tamie over the years.
Unfortunately, it has had to go by the board this year.
On Christmas Day I will be leaving for Jamaica for an important
international conference.
The Heads of Government from countries including Germany, Canada,
Venezuela, Nigeria and Norway will meet in Jamaica to talk over

SHERWOOD BY-ELECTION
The Queensland Liberal Party has good cause to be pleased with
its success in the Sherwood by-election.
It polled particularly well in a by-election situation, and
in a seat where after 22 years, the previous Liberal Member
had built up a large personal following.
The convincing win is a particular tribute to the Liberal's
new Parliamentary leader in Queensland, Dr. Llew Edwards.
I extend my warmest congratulations to Dr Edwards, and

It's very good to be here today, and sDeaking at this venue.
know that the economy is improving, that confidence is increasing
and that we have made major social reforms, but I never thought
that I'd be able to say that the Liberals have arrived at Camelot.
Outside this building, however, there are still a great many
things to achieve, and this Party, with its commritment with its
philosophy, and its policies will achieve them.
