STATE VISIT TO AUSTRALIA BY
THE KING AND QUEEN OF BELGIUM
His M11ajesty King Baudouin I and Her Majesty Queen Fabiola of
Belgium are to make a State Visit to Australia from Monday 7
to Monday 14 March 1983 at the invitation of His Excellency
The Governor-General.
The State Visit will be the first by a Belgian Monarch to
Australia. It is tangible evidence of the development of
valuable and friendly relations between the two countries.

OPENING OF AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL GALLERY
It seems only a short while, Your Majesty, since you were
here with us opening the High Court, the companion building
of this National Gallery. I hope you will take pleasure in
what you will find and see here.
I would like to thank the Council of the Gallery, its
present and its former Chairmanfor the work they have
done preparing for this day.
It was the Government of Sir Robert Menzies, in 1965, that

Now that the Conmmonwealth Games has finished, I want to thank
a great many people for what they havc done for Australia in
making the last 10 days so wonderfully. successful. The Games
brought out the best qualities in Au.:. ralians aind those
qualities came through clearly in th-efforts uand achiev we-: nts

SCHOLARSHIPS TO THE AUSTRALIAN INSTITUTE OF SPORT FOR
DEVELOPING COMMONWEALTH COUNTRIES
The Australian Government will allocate ten sports scholarships
a year at the Australian Institute of Sport to selected
athletes from developing Commonwealth countries.
This is not only in recognition of the highly successful
Commonwealth Games in Brisbane, but also recognises that sport
is an area of Commonwealth co-operation, and one in which

Brisbane, for Australia, They have been a window on the

OPENING OF DARWIN PATROL BOAT BASE
The opening of ' this base is a significant event. We are all
delighted, Your Majesty, that you are able to perform the task.
In recent years your Australian Government has added
considerably to the effectiveness of the Australian Defence
( j Force. Major new equipment are being introduced into that
Force, and the numbers of our reserves have expanded.
This base is part of that expansion. It will add very

ANNOUNCEMENT OF VISIT BY THE PRINCE AND PRINCESS OF WALES
The Prince and Princess of Wales will visit Austral. ia in
March and April next year.
All further dates and details will be announced later.
Wie shall give the Prince and Princess of Wales a warm and
affectionate welcome when they come next year.
This will be the f irst visit since the Royal Wedding and
all Austalians will be glad to see them and show them
together more of Australia than they have so far been able
to see.
