ELECTORATE TALK
These days Australians understand that any call f or Government
to spend money is nothing less than a call to dig into peoples
pockets. One way or another, the taxpayer foots the bill for
every government spending decision. Money for new programmes,
incentives, or special help, is money collected from the pay
packets of Australian working men and women.
As Prime Minister I am often asked publicly, and privately in
my office, to shell out dollars for this project or that. I

Mr. Wran has chosen to ignore the threats of a cut in State
funds in connection with the 37 1/ 2 hour week. How do you
feel about that?

Mr. Wran has got a commitment, obviously, to the power workers
and I suppose to the extreme left in his own Party. He was
an advocate, on an earlier occasion. Hie lost before the
Industrial Commission and now, as Premier, he is not prepared

KU-RING-CAT MUNICIPAL COUNCIL LUNCHEON
It is a pleasure for me to be here in Ku-ring-gai today and
an honour for me to be present at this luncheon. Ku-ring-gai,
of course, contains some of the most beautiful areas on the
North Shore. And one of the finest and most popular national
parks in the State, and I've no doubt that the Ku-ring-gai
Council is also one of the finest and most popular councils
in the State.

NSW YOUNG LIBERALS AND NSW SENATORS' COCKTAIL PARTY
The Young Liberal Movement has a vital role to play in providing
the training ground and support for the future leaders of this
State and Australia as a whole. In addition, it's contribution
to policy formulation is well known and highly valued, especially
where there are issues of special concern to young people.

MEET ING
The Prime Minister has welcomed the joint statement issued
following the Australian-ASEAN Ministerial meeting in Djakarta.
" Clearly the meeting has been most successful", the Prime Minister
said. " Useful progress has been made on a number of points.
" Bilateral discussions will now be held on cheaper fares between
Australia and each ASEAN nation.

Governments around the world are wrestling with energy problems.
These problems relate to both the cost and the supply of energy
resources. Events in Iran with resultant disruption in the world's oil
supplies have focussed international attention on these major
issues. Australia is fortunate to have a strong and growing energy
resources base.
We are now about 70% self-sufficient in crude oil; we have
extensive resources of coal suitable for power generation for

Frank Stewart was from the " old school" of the Australian
Labor Party.
He was a man of strong principle and integrity, who was held
in high respect by all who knew him.

The Prime Minister said today that the Australian Government
welcomed the dramatic progress towards an Egyptian/ Israeli
peace treaty which had been achieved during President Carter's
recent visit to Egypt and Israel. " The prospects for the
signature of a treaty are clearly now very good", the
Prime Minister said.
