THE NORTHERN DEVELOPMENT COUNCIL,

THIS MEETING HAS ASSEMBLED TO GIVE PRACTICAL
EXPRESSION TO OUR HOPES WHATEVER GOVERNMENT WE REPRESENT,
WHATEVER PARTY WE REPRESENT THAT THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE
NORTHERN REGIONS OF AUSTRALIA WILL GO FORWARD WITH SPEED,
WITH CERTAINTY, AND WITH GREAT BENEFITS FOR THE PEOPLE
OF THE NORTH AND ALL AUSTRALIANS.

GRANTS TO ARTISTS
The Prime Minister, Mr. Whitlam, today announced grants
to artists totalling $ 258,000. Among the 86 artists who will
benefit are Mr. Guy Grey-Smith, Mr. Roger Kemp and
Mr. Lyndon Dadswell, each of whom receives a grant of
$ 10,000. In recommending the grants, the Chairman of
the Visual Arts Board, of the Australian Council for the
Arts, Mr. John Baily, said the three artists had made,

GRANT TO THE N. S. W. ART GALLERY
The Prime Minister today-announced that he had approved
a grant of $ 20,000 to the Art Gallery of New South Wales to
help clear its outstanding debt of $ 75,000 on the purchase of
the self-portrait by Pierre Bonnard.
The grant is conditional on the Government of New
South Wales providing the remaining $ 55,000.

PRICES AND INCOMES
I welcome this opportunity to address the Labor Council
of N. S. W. on the forthcoming referendums on prices and incomes.
Your council is the largest State trade union organisation in
Australia. Clearly the attitude of the one million members of
