AUSTRALIAN COUNCIL FOR THE ARTSGRANTS
FOR CRAFTSMEN
The Prime Minister, Mr. Whitlam, has approved grants
totalling $ 199,481 for the crafts.
The grants, which cover all States, were recommended
by the Crafts Board of the Australian Council for the Arts.
The Chairman of the Crafts Board, Mrs. Marea Gazzard,
said that the grants were an expression of the Government's
interest in the crafts as a means of enriching the quality
of life for a broad range of people.

the results and achievements of the Government which you, the

INDUSTRIES ASSISTANCE COMMISSION
The Prime Minister, Mr. Whitlam, announced today
that all reports of the new Industries Assistance Commission
which would not cause damaging speculation would be made public
as soon as they were printed. The new Industries Assistance
Commission will come into operation on 1 January. The Prime
' l1inister also said that he would honour his promise that the
Government should deal with reports from the Commission within

NEW DATA SYSTEM
The Prime Minister, Mr. Whitlam, announced today the
appointment of a Committee to inquire into the development of
a new integrated statistical information system to operate
among departments concerned with the fields of social, welfare
and economic programs.
The committee will report on the general principles
and administrative arrangements that would be necessary for the
operation of such a system.
It will report by 30 -March next year.

RURAL POLICY
The Prime Minister, Mr E. G. Whitlam, and the Minister for
Primary Industry, Senator K. S. Wriedt, today announced the Australian
Government's decision to hold an inquiry into all aspects of rural
policy in Australia. The inquiry will be conducted by a working
group consisting of:

PRIME MINISTER: There were a couple of appointments made in this
last quarter of an hour by the Executive Council. Mr Jack Neary, MBE,
is to be the Vice-Chairman of the Broadcasting Control Board.
Mrs Anne Lowery a member of the Metric Conversion Board. There were
several other decisions made by Cabinet-yesterday which individual
ministers have already announced. There is one which falls to
me, it concerns the GATT Anti-Dumiping Code. You will recall on the

AUSTRALIAN COUNCIL FOR THE ARTS THEATRE GRANTS
The Prime Minister, Mr. Whitlam, today approved grants of
$ 47,490 recommended by the Theatre Board of the Australian Council
for the Arts. The grants go to all States and cover drama and
dance development and training, and youth activities.
The Theatre Board in recommending the grants, said that the
emphasis in these grants was on training and development in the
smaller companies, and with the smaller forms of assistance which

UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY
OF THE UNITED NATIONS1
THAT DECLARATION HAS COME TO BE RECOGNISED AS ONE OF
THE GREAT ENLIGHTENED EVENTS IN MODERN HISTORY. ITS ANNIVERSARY
MARKS THE BEGINNING OF AN EQUALLY HOPEFUL AND ENLIGHTENED
MOVEMENT, FOR THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY HAS ALSO DECIDED TO LAUNCH

AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL: PARIS CONFERENCE ON ABOLITION
OF TORTURE.
The Prime Minister, Mr E. G. Whitlam, sent the
following message to the Secretary-General, Amnesty International:
" The Australian Government strongly supports the objectives
of Amnesty International in its campaign soeeking-the abolition
