Chairman of the Export Development Council)
Sir John Allison, chairman of the Export
Development Council today made the following comment in
Sydney on the economic proposals outlined by the Prime
Minister ( Mr. Menzies) last night.
" The measures adopted are wise and far-reaching.
The vital first step of consumer spending will be encouraged,
and this will be followed by industrial and business confidence.

FOR PRESS. ( Statement by the Minister for Trade, Mr. John McEwen, M. P.)
Mr. MoEwen said today that he had a sympathetic
understanding of the serious problem revealed in President Kennedy's
message to the United States Congress proposing curtailment of the
production of food and other agricultural products. The President
indicated that this curtailment would need to be either through an
arbitrary reduction in production or, indirectly, through reduced
governmental price supports.

The Minister for Supply, Mr. Allen Fairhall, has
received from the Deputy Premier of Victoria,
Mr. A. G. RYLA. H., a letter.
Praising the work of Department of Supply officers
in the recent bushfires in the Dandenongs, Mr. Rylah
expressed the sincere approciation of the Victorian
Government. He said that the tanks and trucks provided by the
Department of Supply had been of inestimable value in

RE-APPOINTMENT OF AUSTRALIAN HIGH
COMMISSIONLR IN LONDON
Statement by the Prime Minister ( Rt, Hon. R. G. Menzies)
Sir Eric Harrison, has been
re-appointed as Australian High Commissioner in Britain for
a further term until 25th October, 1962. Sir Eric was
appointed as High Commissioner on 25th October, 1956, for a
period of five years. The current extension will therefore
increase the term of appointment to six years.
Sir Eric agreed in 1961, in view of the
approaching general election in Australia, to remain in

This afternoon the Prime Minister and several of
his Cabinet colleagues met representatives of the Manufacturing
Industries Advisory Council. The Council was represented by
Sir James Kirby, President; Mr. John Burnett, Mr. R. A. Irish
and Dr. J. Vernon,
Mr. Menzies said that he and his colleagues had had
a most interesting and valuable discussion about various
aspects of the Australian economy and, in particular, of
