with some general observations of no great
novelty, but the recollection of which is
essential to a uiseful review of Australian
defence. Every defence programme must,
in its nature, be flexible. As international
strategic considerations change, so we must
be ready to change our own defence

Mr. Chairman and Gentlemen
I speak here tonight under a certain disadvantage
because I have to make a speech about the Seventh Annual Meatworks
Convention and I am not a meatworker, norindeed in any
non-human sense do I drive any cattle ( Laughter) and I am up
here with an acknowledged Australian expert who has just spoken
to you, but I will try to survive this handicap.

is the biggest Civic Reception I ever had in my life, ( Laughter)

The Prime Minist-er ( Sir Robert Menzies)
announced today that Mr. Averell Harriman, Under-
Secretary of State for Political Affairs in the
Unittod States of America will pay a short visit to
Australia following the A. NZUS meeting in Wellington,
Now Zealand, which concludes on 6th June.
Mr. Harriman will arrive in Canberra
on the evening of Thursday, 6th June and will have

PRESENTATION OF CHEQUE TO LEGACY
Statement by the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. Sir Robert
Menzies
The Prime Minister, Sir Robert Menzies, this
afternoon presented to Canberra Legacy a cheque for
œ 1 910.17.4, being proceeds of the cricket match
between the Prime Minister's XI and the M. C. C. at Manuka
Oval on February 6. The cheque was handed to Mr. George
Kimlin, President of Canberra Legacy.
Also present at the handing-over wore the
President of the A. C. T. Cricket Association, Mr. C.

FLYING OF FLAGS ON GOVERNMENT BUILDINGS
Statement by the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. Sir Robert
Menzie s
TI-e Australian JFrLag will be flown on all working
days on Commonwealth Government buildings throughout
Australia. The Prime Minister, Sir Robert Menzies has
expressed a wish that the Flag should be displaye. more
prominently and has asked all Departments to arrange to
fly the Flag from the main flagpole on such buildings
between 8 a. m. and sunset on working days.

SHOW TO BE OPENED BY TELEPHONE HOOKUP
The Prime Minister, Sir Robert Menzies, tomorrow afternoon
at 2.30 will officially open the Moree Agricultural Show without being there
in person. Instead, over a two way telephone hookup between Canberra
and Moree, Sir Robert will listen to the Mayor of Moree introducing him and
will then perform the opening ceremony by speaking into a microphone on his
desic. A public address system at the Moree showgrounds will
0 amplify his address to the people present.
