PREMIERS' CONFERENCE
Statement by the Prime Minister. the Rt. Hon. Sir Robert Menzies.
It should be understood that todayts meeting with
the Premiers was recognised by all of us as a preliminary meetings
We will assemble again on June 1st to arrive at definite
conclusions about the agreement which is to succeed the last one
made in 1959 to regulate the financial assistance arrangements
which have operated since that time.
Today's meeting was, therefore, exploratory. The

PRIVATE SIMPSON'S WAR RELICS

The war relics of Private John Simpson Kirkpatrick
" The Man with the Donkey" have been presented to the Australian
War Museum. They are the gift of' his sister, Mrs. Annie Simpson
Pearson of Brightlingsea, Essex, who has said that they should
remain the property of her late brother's beloved Australia*
They comprise Private Simpson's identity disc, his
service medals and ribbons, his Oak Leaf and scroll for his

VISIT TO CANBERRA BY MRii. CABOTI LODGE
I have had with my senior Ministerial colleagues very
valuable discussions this afternoon on the subject of Vietnam
with the United States Special Ambassador, Mr. Cabot Lodge.
Mr. Lodge is visiting Canberra at the instance of the
President of the United States, and has brought with him the
views of the President and the Administration; to these he
has added his own detailed and first-hand knowledge of the

1965 CORAL SEA CELEBRATIONS
Statement by the Prime Minister. the Rt. Hon. Sir Robert Menzies.
General Dean C. Strother, the Commander-in-Chief of the
North American Air Defence Command, is to be the Coral Sea
Guest of Honour for the 1965 celebrations which begin in Sydney
on Monday, the 3rd May.
General Strother replaces General Hunter Harris, Jnr.,
Commander-ln-Chief of the Pacific Airforce, who had been
previously nominated to take part in this year's celebrations

I have one or two grievances that I will expose to
you in a moment but before I do i want to tell you that I have had
two singularly happy experiences here on this platform tonight.
The first was that the Registrar, the successor of the famous

The Minister for National Development, the Hon.
D. E. Fairbairn, DFC, MP, will participate in the Anzac Day
commemoration in Wellington, New Zealand, at the invitation
of the New Zealand Government.
The ceremonies will commemorate the fiftieth
anniversary of the Gallipoli landing.
Mr. Fairbairn, who was elected to the Parliament
in 1949 and joined the Ministry in 1962, served as a pilot
