QUESTION: Sir, yesterday it was announced that the Commonwealth was financing a Grant to the Monash University of up to about œ 500,000 and referred to a report by the Universities Commission. I was wondering if we could have a copy of the Report.

be kept on during the speeches I make a mere token of it and
I take it off, but, funny as itis, I think I'll keep it on today,
under the circumstances.
I think we've all been delighted to hear the narrative
given to us by Dr. Dickson: it's a very checkered history,

RE-APPOINTMENT OF PROFESSOR WILFRED PREST
The Prime Minister ( Mr. Menzies) announced today
the re-appointment of Professor Wilfred Prest as a member
of the Commonwealth Grants Commission for a further period
of three years commencing on 1st October, 1959. Professor
Prest has been a member of the Commission since October,
1953. The other members of the Commission are the
chairman, Sir Alexander Fitzgerald, and Mr. A. J.
Reid, I. S. O.

Sir and ladies and gentlemen, I was very interested to
be reminded that I was the number one ticket holder. I am the
number one ticket holder of the Carlton Football Club. I hope
I bring more luck to the builders.
Now I want to begin with a complaint. We have a practice
in Parliament of having questions without notice, and if anybody

STATEMENT BY THlE PRIME MINISTER
The final meetings of the International Monetary
Fund, the International Bank of Reconstruction and Development,
and the International Finance Corporation held in Washington
on Friday unanimously adopted a resolution that the
Australian Governor be Chairman of the Board of Governors for
the ensuing twelve months and preside in that capacity at the
series of annual meetings of these institutions to be held in
iUashington in September, 1960.

wish to refer very briefly to the tragic loss that has been suffered
by our sister member of the Commonwealth, Ceylon, by the
assassination of her Prime Minister, Mr. Bandaranaike. I knew
him, of course, very well. At an earlier date I knew his distinguished
predeccssor, Don Stephen Senanayake, who was accidentally

RESULT OF COMMONWEALTH LOAN
Statement by the Prime Minister and Acting Treasurer,
the Rt. Hon. R. G. Menzies
The Prime Minister and Acting Treasurer, Mr R. G. Menzies,
said today that cash subscriptions of œ C58.5 million were received1
to the Commonwealth loan which closed on Wednesday, September 23.
The loan target was f-50 million, and the over-subscription was
therefore million.
Mr. Menzies said he considered this to be a very satisfactory

VISIT BY THE PRIME MINISTER OF MALAYA
STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER, RT. HON. R. G. MENZIES
The Prime Minister announced today that the Prime
Minister of Malaya, Tunku Abdul Rahman, had accepted an invitation
to visit Australia between 30th October and 14+ th November
of this year. He would have discussions with the Australian
Cabinet in Canberra and fulfil a number of important engagements.

BROADCAST BY THE PRIME MINISTER ( MR. MENZIES)
for the
OPENING OF WORLD REFUGEE YEAR IN AUSTRALIA
1959 has been named World Refugee Year by the United Nations.
In the resolution carried in November of last year, it was
decided to focus interest in the refugee problem and to encourage
additional financial contributions from Governments, voluntary agencies
and the general public.
An Appeal was made to all Member States to promote World
Refugee Year. This humane resolution was carried against the votes
