Statement by Acting Prime Minister. Mr. J. MoEwen
The Acting-Prime Minister, Mr. McEwen, said today that
thle Australian Universities Commission, having regard to movements
in professorial salaries during the past two years, has
proposed that the Commfonwealth Government should accept an increase
in the basic professorial salary on which Commonwealth
assistance is made available under the States Grants ( Universities)

which he was the guest of honour, Mr. Menzies said, in part:-

Asked about his reactions to the news from Paris, Mr. Mensies
saids " Well, I suppose I'm like all the rest of us it makes one
feel very anxious but my first reaction to what appears oe the surface
of the problem so far is that it is an unparalleled piece of hmnbug.
I mean, the greatest experts in spying in recent tines asking another
Power to apologise humbly seem to me to be almost unbelievable. In
fact it is so absurd it can't really be the whole root of the matter.

The Acting Prime Minister, Mr. John McEien, said
today he ias most distressed to hear of the decth of Mr.
Percy Clarey. Mr. McEren said Mr. Clarey -ias one of the
great men in the Australian Trade Jnion and political
movements. He had devoted himself with great courage to
overcoming his physical disabilities in looking after the
affairs of his own electorate and in sharing his Party's
political responsibilities generally.

Statement by the Acting Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. J-McEwen
The Acting Prime Msinister, Mr. McEwen, announced
today that the Commonwealth Government had closely studied the
case submitted by the Premier of Queensland, Mr. Nicklin, on
behalf of his Government and the su-, ar industry for an increase
in the domestic price of sugar.
Mr. McEwen said that the Commonwealth Goveriient had
agreed that--. the Sugar Agreement should be amended to increase the

Describing the Summit meting next week as " one of the great
climwctic events in the world", the Prime Minister of Australia, Mr.
Robert Gordon Menzies, surveyed the Commonwealth in relation to the

APPOINTMENT OF CHAIRMAN OF NAi2IONAL LIBRARY COUNCIL
Statement by the Acting Prime Minister Hon. J. MoEwen
The Acting Prime Minister, Mr. MoEwen, announced today
that the Government had appointed Dr. A. Grenfell Price, C. M. G.,
of Adelaide, as Chairman of the National Library Council.
In the House last Thursday, Mr. McEwen outlined the
Government's decisions on the National Library. These decisions
included the division of the National Library into two parts
