MESSAGE FROM THE PRITME M~ INISTER
My Colleagues in Government and I wish you all a
Happy New Year. I believe 1972 offers us all a great opportunity to
make real progress towards the fulfilment of our long term goals
of security, progress and prosperity.
And I believe there are two main ingredients for
success confidence and co-operation.
There is no problem so great that it cannot he solved,
but we must have a will to win and a readiness to meet each other

Statement by the Prime Minister, Mr. William McMahon
The Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. William McMahon, M. P.,
today sent the following telegram to the Acting Premier of
Queensland, the Hon. G. W. Chalk, M. L. A.
" I HAVE YOUR MESSAGE ABOUT THE DISASTROUS
CYCLONE IN NORTH QUEENSLAND. ON BEHALF OF THE
COMMONWEALT1 GOVERNMENT I EXPRESS DEEP SYMPATHY TO
THE RELATIVES OF THOSE WV-O HAVE LOST THEIR LIVES
AND TO THOSE WHO HAVE BEEN INJURED AND OTHERWISE
AFFECTED BY THE CYCLONE.
WE ARE READY TO JOIN WITH YOUR

STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER
MR.-WILLIAM McMAHON
ON THE AUSTRALIAN DOLLAR
The Government has decided to establish the market
rate-for the Australian dollar on the U. S. dollar at an
appreciation of 6.32% on the Previous parity relationship. This
means an overall depreciation in relation to the parities of our
trading partners as a whole of approximately 1.75%.
On this basis, the Government has decided that the
Reserve Bank will fix market limits for buying and selling centering

PREMIERS' CONFERENCE
Statement by the Prime Minister, Mr. William McMahon
During my recent absence overseas, it was proposed
by the Premier of New South Wales and supported by some other
Premiers that a special Premiers' conference be held to
discuss the economic situation.
The Government has given full consideration to this
proposal and I have forwarded letters to the Premier of 3ew
South WTales and all other Premiers advising them of this decision.
I have informed the Premiers that in view of the

MASTER PLAN FOR BRISBANE AIRPORT
Joint Statement by the Prime Minister, Mr. William
McMahon and the Premier of Queensland, Mr. J.

The Joint Coimmonwealth/ State Advisory Committee on
Brisbane Airport has completed the first major step in developing
a master plan for the future of Brisbane Airoort. This was
announced today by the Prime Minister, Mr. McMahon and the Premier
of Queensland, Mr. Bjelke-Petersen.

PARLIAMENTARY SALARIES AND ALLOWANCES

The Government has decided not to proceed with any
of the three Bills relating to increases in Parliamentary A'alaries
and allowances. In practical terms this means tZhat Parlian~ entary
salaries will not be increased in the life of this Parliament.
Parliamentary salary determinations are a difficult subject at any
time. They give rise to a variety of public consideration and

I have been informed that the Labor Party opposes significant
parts of the Bills relating to Mr Justice Kerr's rec~ ommendations on
salaries and allowances for members of the Commnonwealth Parliament.
In my statement in the House on 16 September, I said that the
Government had decided that there should be an enquiry into
Parliamentary salaries and allowances.
