Much has been said in this election campaign about
Australia's security. You know there is a wide gulf of
difference uetween the policies of the Government on defence
and those of the Opposition. Mr. Calwell leads a Party which
so reduced Australia's defence expenditure in the post-war
years that its last Budget that of 1949/ 50 provided only

WITH
THE PRIME MINISTER, RT. HON. HAROLD HOLT, M. P.
INTRODUCTION:
P. M. One thing I think I should clear up is the use the Labor Party,
including the Leader, is making of views allegedly expressed by the late
President Kennedy. They represent such a travesty and such a mis-statement
of his own position that I am not prepared to have this perpetrated
indefinitely. To deal first, though, with the cost of the Labor programme, I

The Policy Speech made last night oy Mr. Calwell
exposes fundamental differences of attitude between the
Government and Opposition. The choice you will make is not
simply a choice between leaders of different personality
or etvween parties which would maintain the same steady course
for Australia, but differ on some significant points of detail.
The issues go much deeper than that.
Each side has stated its view of kustralia's external

Security is the theme of this broadcast security
not only for the nation, but for the individual.
Nationalsecurity is linked with the adequacy of
our defence forces and the strength of our alliances.
Security for the individual depends on how
successfully the economy is conducted and how justly the
national wealth is distributed.
As to national security. We have a small population
living in a vast continent. We cannot hope to
