NEW ZEALAND CONTRIBUTION TO TASMANIAN
BUSHFIRE FUND
Statement by the Prime Minister, Mr. Harold Holt
I have received advice that the New Zealand Government
has donated œ 10, 000 ( sterling) ($ A25, 000) to aid bushfire victims in
Tasmania. In addition, the New Zealand High Commissioner in
Canberra, Mr. Luke Hazlett, is organising an appeal among his staff
in Australia. These warmhearted contributions reflecting as they
do the close friendship between the two countries will be much

DEATH OF DAME ANN McEWEN
Tribute by the Prime Minister, Mr. Harold Holt
My colleagues of the Government and I are saddened by
the death of Dame Ann McEwen and express our deep sympathy.
Dame Ann was a woman of great strength of character
which sustained her bravely and cheerfully during her long illness.
Her many public services won her the well-merited
honour which she carried with distinction.
She will be mourned by all who knew her.

COMMONWEALTH AID TO TASMANIA
Statement by the Prime Minister, Mr. Harold Holt
I wish to make it clear that contribution by the Commonwealth
of $ 250, 000 to help meet urgent cases of hardship which come to the
notice of the Tasmanian Government is merely the first advance of the
Commonwealth's bushfire assistance.
I have already assured Mr. Reece and stated publicly that the
Commonwealth Government recognises that Tasmania, being a small
State with limited resources, will need more assistance in other directions

MR. HOLT: Well, I am very glad to be back home, and the first thing I want
to say is how saddened I have been to learn of this tragic business in
Tasmania. VWhen I got the news this morning, I sent a message off
immediately to Mr. Reece and then tried to contact him by telephone, but
he was, I gather, on the mainland at the time, and I talked to Mr. Fagan.

Statement by the Acting Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon.
John McEwen
We feel today for all Tasmanians, For the Commonweath
Government, on my own personal behalf, and on behalf of the
entire Australian community, 1 express deep distress and sorrow at the
bushf ire disaster in Southern Tasmania, including in and around Hobart.
I add particular feelings of sympathy for those who have been bereaved and
also for those who have lost their homes, or their livelihood, or both.

The Government and the people of New Zealand are,
I know, sharing the sadness of Australia in our loss of brave young men
from this tragic mishap occurring in the stir of a close military
operation. But as we mourn these losses, we remember with
gratitude that the men of our two countries have combined many times
with a success achieved by their skill, courage and comradeship.
