SUGAR PRICE INCREASE
Statement by the Acting Prime. Minister and Minister for Trade
agr rlidustry, Mr. John McEwen
The Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Trade and
Industry, Mr. John McEwen, commented today on the announcement by
the Premier of Queensland, Mr. Nickltn, that the domestic price of sugar
would be increased as from 19th June.

PREMIERS' CONFERENCE AND LOAN COUNCIL
Statement by the Acting Prime Minister, Mr. John McEwen
Arrangements have now been completed with the State
Premiers for meetings of the Premiers' Conference and the Australian
Loan Council to be held in Canberra on Wednesday, 28th June and
continuing, if necessary, on Thursday, 29th June.
The Prime Minister, Mr. Holt, will preside at the Premiers'
Conference and Mr. McMahon, as Treasurer, will be Chairman of the
Loan Council.

Australia, in common with practically the whole world,
welcomes the action which the Security Council has now unanimously
taken in calling for a cessation of all warlike activities in the Middle
East. We earnestly hope that it will now become possible for
the United Nations to take an active and effective part in bringing about
an enduring settlement of the problems of the region and ensure the

Statement by the Acting Prime Minister, Mr. John McEwen
The outbreak of fighting in the Middle East is a tragic development.
All Australians are dismayed at the suffering and destruction that is being
brought to the people of the countries which are now in conflict. In addition
any large scale fighting in that region which upsets the precarious balance
there holds dangers of involving outside powers and endangering peace elsewhere.

Mr. Mayor and Madame Drapeau:
It was a very happy decision of the Australian Government to
decide to be represented at the Montreal Exposition. Our motives were
largely stimulated by the friendship over so many years with the people of
Canada and our desire to join in celebrating the centennial of this great
