I have this passion to visit Israel as Prime Minister. It is true
that I have wanted to visit Israel but as part of a visit to the
Middle East. I believe that the Middle East remains one of the

TASMANIAN-FORESTRY DISPUTE
The Prime Minister, the Minister for Primary Industry, Mr
John Kerin and the Minister for Arts, Heritage and
Environment, Mr Barry Cohen, today reaffirmed the
Commonwealth's determination both to protect those National
Estate areas in Tasmania that may be of world Heritage
value, and to resolve once and for all the issue of whether
there are viable alternatives to forestry opearations in the
contentious National Estate areas.
The Commonwealth continues to believe that it is necessary

On 26 Januag0 during my visit to Europe and the middle East, I
will be meeting President Kyprianou for discussions on
developmento An Cyprus and other matters of mutual interest.
Australia's warm relations with Cyprus are given added strength
by the presence in Australia of the many Cypriots who have made
Australia their home.
Australia is 3nxious that the differences between the disputing
parties in Cyprus be resolved as soon as possible through
negotiations and dialogue on the basis of the sovereignty,

JOURNALIST: We have something like more than 120,000 young
-people between 15 and 19 years of age out of-work. What do you
say to them?
PM: Well, you say these things. Firstly, that there has been a
significant improvement in the period since we have been in
office. Since 1983 we have created something like 700,000 new
jobs which is a record in terms of new job creation. I say to
them that we are not only getting the economy right so that there

PM: Yes it is. I have had the opportunity of getting to know
Ted Noffs over a period of time, particularly in regard to his
work in the drug education area and there has been financial
assistance provided from the Fed Govt and the State govt but Ted
belives that more is needed to ensure that the best possible

years I have Ceveloped a considerable respect for his commitment
to Australia.
He made a major contribution to the development of the Australian
media, although his interests have been much more wide-ranging
than that,
I pay tribute to his contribution over many years, and extend my
sincere condolences to Lady Mary and his family.

The Acting Prime Minister, Mr Bowen, today sent the
following message to Mrs Antill-Rose, daughter of the
late Dr John Antill:
" On behalf of the Government and people of Australia
I extend to you and your family sincere condolences
on the death of your father Dr John Antill, CMG, OBE.
Dr Antill was a great Australian whose contribution
to Australia's musical life as a composer, conductor
and as music editor for the ABC, will always be
remembered. His compositions, including the ballet

The Commonwealth Government has recently held discussions
with the South Australian Government and the Australian
Cricket Board on a proposal to associate cricket with the
Australian Institute of Sport, through the establishment of
an AIS cricket academy in Adelaide.
I am pleased to announce today that the Government will
provide $ 300,000 in a full financial year to bring the
arrangements with the South Australian Government, the ACB
and the AIS to fruition. Providing all the necessary

PM: well, that is not entirely an accident. I told them they
would be deported if they didn't.
