History of Australia".

Caucus has today elected Senator Peter cook and Mr Gary Punch to
the Ministry.
Senator Cook is to be appointed Minister for Resources.
Mr Punch is to be appointed Minister for the Arts and
Territories. Mr Duffy will join the Cabinet retaining his current
appointment as Minister for Trade Negotiations.
Senator Richardson is to be appointed Minister for the Arts,
Sport, the Environment, Tourism and Territories, and will also
join the Cabinet.

Information request which the Leader of the Opposition ' made
on 31 December 1987 about Mr John Brown's resignation.
All documents have been released other than those which are
exempt under the FOI Act. The exempt documents and they

Chris Hurford's retirement from the Parliament, which he
announced earlier today, comes after eighteen years of
distinguished service as the member for Adelaide.
A chartered accountant prior to his election to the
Parliament in 1969, Mr Hurford served in the then Labor
Opposition's Shadow Ministry from 1976 to 1983. At various
times over that period Mr Hurford was Labor's spokesperson
on Treasury matters; industry and commerce; trade; consumer
affairs; and education.

I warmly congratulate Peter Dowding as Western Australia's
new Premier-elect.
I am confident that the election of Mr Dowding will ensure
that the popular, stable and forward-thinking leadership
provided by his predecessor, Mr Brian Burke, over the past
five years will continue in Western Australia.
Mr Dowding will bring to his Premiership wide experience and
a strong social conscience, particularly in the youth area,

1 am delighted to respond to Captain Portal's toast.
In doing so, I note that Spain was the first country to
accept the Australian Government's invitation to take part
in the Tall Ships Australia 1988 event.
I note also that the Captain's ship, Juan Sebastian Do
Elcano is no stranger to Australian waters; she visite'd
Au-stralia on her maiden voyage in 1928.
years later, we welcome her back for Australia's
aicentenary.

Christmas is traditionally a time of peace and a time of hope.
As Australians look back over 1987, I believe we have strong
grounds for optimism for the future for both our country and,
indeed, the world.
Earlier this month we applauded asj the superpowers took an
historic step towards disarmament. We all trust this is only a
first step into a new era of peace and hope for every man, woman
and child on the planet a first : step towards a saner, safer
world. For Australia 1987 was a year of consolidation and achievement.

Brian Burke, the Premier of Western Australia, has today
announced his intention to retire from active politics on
February when he will resign the Premiership.
I wish to place on record my appreciation for the great
contribution Brian Burke has made since he was swept to
office in the State election of 1983, immediately prior to
the election of my Government. During his tenure, Western
Australia has recorded remarkable growth, due in great
measure to the restructuring reforms which Premier Burke and
