TRANSCRIPT OF UNEDITED INTERVIEW WITH CLIVE ROBERTSON,
NEWSWORLD, 21 MARCH 1989
E 0 E PROOF ONLY
ROBERTSON: Mr Hawke the first time I was aware of you, you
were long side-boarded, dark haired, boss of the ACTU with a
lot of fire and I remember you being interviewed by two
people in Perth and they must have offended you and you
walked out. So they called you back and of course you had
all the trump cards. You don't seem to do that so often
now. PM: Well, perhaps the interviewers are better and perhaps

JOURNALIST: Mr Hawke, did it take some quick talking to
make sure that Senator Walsh remained in Cabinet?
PM: It wasn't a matter of quick talking. I can be quite
straightforward about what happened. Peter Walsh has had an
extraordinarily difficult portfolio. Being Minister for
Finance at a period when you're cutting billions of dollars
in outlays is a very very unrewarding, politically
unrewarding business. He's been under a lot of pressure and

today and I guarantee you were there in Sydney on Saturday
too, were you not, at the Golden Slipper?
PM: I was indeed Bert.
NEWTON: Did you stick with the Golden filly?
PM: I did, and I tipped it and I backed it.
NEWTON: Good on you because I thought last week you might

HS: Prime Minister welcome to the studio.
PM: Thank you Haydn, it's always good to be back with you.
HS: What's happened to the Labor Party in Canberra because some
of the rank and f ile kinda feel you've lost touch with them and
you seem to be rubbing shoulders with the big boys, the Alan
Bonds and...
PM; Oh that's history, I mean it's 1989 there was a bit of that
talk at the beginning of 1988 but none of that talk around now.

PH: Well they are at the lower end of the range of
expectations so to that extent I'm pleased. But there's no
room for complacency. The export figure's flat, the Import
figures are dawn and we certainly want to see the import
figures down. But this I think means that the Government needs
to continue the firm policies that it's pursuing now. That is

PM: Before I make myself available for questions I wanted
to refer to the unfolding yet again of the chaos in the
Opposition when it comes to the question of unfolding
policy. You would've seen the program on Sunday where the
Shadow Minister for Finance referred to the idea of giving
taxing powers back to the States. That provoked this quite
remarkable statement by the Leader of the opposition this

FOR MEDIA 13 MARCH 1989
Today is Commonwealth Day. Today, and every second Monday
in March, the members of the Commonwealth celebrate this
unique association of countries.
The Commonwealth has developed into an important
international forum, having taken the lead on political
issues such as the Rhodesia settlement and South Africa, and
standing as a testament to co-operation between developed
and developing nations on practical matters as varied as
environmental issues and telecommunications.

SPEECH BY THE PRIME MINISTER
NATIONAL HOUSING CONFERENCE
CANBERRA 13 MARCH 1989
I want first of all to congratulate the organisers of this
conference. You have rightly recognised the importance of housing as an
issue important to the economy, and important to
Australian families and your meeting, very appropriately,
coincides with the recent upsurge in the community's concern
about the future of housing in Australia.
That community concern is rooted in a number of factors,
